Okamura" Subject Re QM 2 JSC had their 1400 scale QM2 out for about a month now. Take a look at http//www.jsc.pl/en/index.php, click on the photo and then click on the thumbnails along the bottom of the new window. There are six photos of the assembled model, though the photoetched railings aren't included. See http//www.kartonwork.pl/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3045 for photos of one in construction. David T. Okamura ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Gmshoda@cs.com Subject Re Enlarging ship plans on a copier Another suggestion is to recheck your math. I was scratch building a series of pre Washington treaty US dreadnought battleships in paper at 550 scale. I was comfortable with process of determining what enlargement to use on photocopiers. However, I must have made a mental error in calculating the magnification for plans for USS Delaware. I made a pretty nice model of the ship, but was suprised when I put it down next to USS Utah. Utah was noticeably shorter although Utah, a later ship, was actually 3 feet longer. So I ended up with a collection of 8 models (I did not do one of the Pennsylvania class since I had 2 plastic models of the modernized Arizona already) of the different BB classes from South Carolina to Maryland in 550 scale and an oddball Delaware in what proved to be 500 scale after I measured the length of the model and calculated its actual scale. So it is a good idea to recheck your math. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From ELLshipmodeler@aol.com Subject Re enlarging scale ship plans on a copier All the tips so far have been good. I would like to make two additional points which I have not seen yet. Setting a copier to enlarge 171.4% in one step or several doesn't guarantee an accurate final product. The percentage setting may not be exact. When I enlarge or reduce a plan I draw a line on the plan and then check the length on the final copy. So, on the 1/600 plan draw a line in both the horizontal and vertical direction, say 10 inches long. After the enlargement is made these lines must be 17.14 inches long for a scale of 1/350. If they are not, reset the copier until you get an accuracy you are willing to accept. Obviously, the length of the lines can be anything convenient as long as you correctly compute the length of the final line. The second point is that enlarging plans works for some purposes such as hull lines and general arrangements. However, the thickness of the lines also enlarges, which has the potential of causing problems. Also, obviously the detail does not increase with the enlargement. Building only to the blown up plans yields a 1/600 model at a scale of 1/350. Other sources must be used for details not included in the smaller plans. Although I have drawings for the vessel which show plan and side elevations for the winch, I am lacking any decent photographs of the item. For reference, on the LCM I (the type built in the UK from 1940 to 1944) the winch is just forward of the wheelhouse and central. If anyone knows the makers or has decent photographs I would be very grateful. The model is to 1/76 scale and the rest of the craft is heavily detailed, so I want to avoid a fudge if possible. Many thanks in anticipation, Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "keith bender" Subject Plans for the Kilauea class AE's Hi SMMLies, I'm in need of some plans for the Kilauea class AE's, ammo ships. Others in the class are Butte, Santa Barbara, Mount Hood, Flint, Shasta, Mount Baker and Kiska. Anyone know of a set of General arrangements drawing? Thanks, Keith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "James Kloek" Subject ROCON 25 is Sunday, September 19 ROCON 25, the Rochester, NY IPMS annual contest and show will be held September 19, at the Park Plaza Hotel, 175 Jefferson Rd., in Rochester. This is a new and much improved location, as we had outgrown our old site. This is an excellent local contest, and there are always a lot of good ship models. We have outstanding vendors this year including Iron Shipwrights, Ace Hobbies, Red Star Hobbies, Baseline Hobbies, and 3 Guyz. We also have a really good set of prizes for the raffle, so don't miss this 25th anniversary show. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at http//smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at http//apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
