Its radio controlled, maneuvers, submerges etc. Must be about 6 feet long. Looks really neat with the large windows illuminated as it moves around in twilight lighting on a local lake. I believe he cast the hull in fiber glass. There's a group here in the U.S. northeast that has a model submarine meet once a year in Conn. Val Kraut ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From SSachsen@actransit.org Subject Nemo's Nautilus there was also a vacuform kit with some white metal parts and a 'squid' base--of the 1954 Disney version. I've never attempted building it since I've never tried a vacuform kit--though someday..... -) it's about 8" or so long. as a bit of trivia... when given a tour of the collections at the Maritime Museum in SF, CA, I saw one of the actual movie models. apparently it had originally been acquired by the first owner of the Balclutha and was grandfathered in by the NPS when they took over. it's a model of Nautilus when it was undergoing damage repair at Volcania, is about 2' long surrounded by scaffolding with some hillside diorama aspects. the model is very fragile--it looks to be balsa and tissue for the plating (like a balsa airplane model). while everyone else was ohing and ahing over the famous Alcatraz paper mache heads, I was in a corner trying hard not to drool over this Nautilus -) BTW, this was not a general tour, but one given to attendees at a maritime museum conference--I don't know if they even still have this model since it's really outside the scope of collections at Maritime. s ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "DUCKMAN" Subject RENWAL KITS HOWDY ALL, THESE KITS SHOW UP ON E-BAY EVERY NOW AND AGAIN. THERE IS A 1/500 SHIP KIT UP FOR BID RIGHT NOW. HOPE THIS HELPS, DAVID IN DIXIE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From MPMenache@aol.com Subject Re NAUTILUS On the web site "monsters in motion" there are several versions of the Nautilus in resin kit format. Just search for nautilus and it will take you there. I personally like the Jules Vern version from BCI. enjoy michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Michael D'Silva" Subject Re Captain Nemo's Nautilus Hi Jim, While I haven’t tried to scratch-build the Nautilus, there are plenty available from Comet Miniatures (www.comet-miniatures.com). Don’t pay much attention to the scales they advertise because they seem quite inaccurate when based on the dimensions given in the Jules Verne novel. There are two (Disney style) models available at this time, with another due sometime later this year. The smaller one (approx. 1258) is based on the Airfix one you mentioned. You can read all about it here http//www.starshipmodeler.com/other/kr_nautilus.htm All are in resin and are intended for the intermediate to advanced modeller as the casting is primitive and will require a lot of clean-up, filling, sanding, etc., to make a decent model from it. However, that should not be a discouraging factor for someone wishing to build one of these kits. Michael D'Silva Victoria, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Daniel Taylor" Subject U-Boat Type VII C detail question Hi Bob You asked >> Does anyone know, based on experience or a visit aboard one of the surviving U-boats (hopefully a Type VIIC) know whether the main deck is metal or wooden? << Sorry it has taken a couple of days to get back to you. I can, however, state that the type VII did have a wooden deck. In fact there are two types. The standard, slotted, type depicted on the kit, and the late type where they stopped bothering with all the attractively routed slots and used narrow planks instead. The Revell rendition is not quite accurate but, then again, not bad really. The replacement items I have seen have been pretty good on pattern but the etched brass is too thin to depict the original accurately. Perhaps as a template??? All the best Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Peter Subject Model Stores in Tokyo There is an excellent guide to model stores in Tokyo, complete with maps, here http//geraet040.web.infoseek.co.jp/tokyo_hobby_shops/ Of the shops cited, I would recommend Yellow Submarine and Leonardo as the most ship-oriented. Yellow Submarine has the better selection of newer kits, PE and accessories, while Leonardo is better for older kits, and the Waterline series. The two shops are only about a 20 min walk apart in the Akihabara area.
