Flawed though they were, I can't help but love them. Rick Lundin wrote >> The Essex class carrier may have had a few fit problems but nothing that would cause undue concern to a 10 year old kid. The flat bottom facilitiated flight operations (much better than the Revell Essex), although the Revell planes from their Essex were much better than the Renwal F-9F's and A-3D's. << I must respectfully disagree. I liked the Renwal F9Fs better. The cross section of the wings was (appropriately) thinner, and the chord is longer. I suspect that Renwal was trying to portray an F9F-8, and Revell was trying to portray an earlier F9F. I thought that the A3Ds (Comparing the Renwal from their Essex SCB-125 and the Revell from the Forrestal) were not too different at all. Of course, I don't think that any A3D ever operated off of an Essex, but in at least one of their Essex-class aircraft sets, Revell included an F-4 Phantom, so Renwal was hardly alone in this sort of error. I'd be interested in comparing notes. << Funny you should mention that, Jim. I've got FOUR different versions of the Nautilus in the works. The first, one I've been tinkering with for a few years, has a hull made from an old Aurora Skipjack hull with the forward 1/3 made from an Estes model rocket nose cone. The wheelhouse and floodlight are inspired by the Hunley, roughly cylindrical with flat port/starboard sides, oval when seen from the top. It has fore and aft diving planes, a cruciform tail, the dinghy recessed into the center of the "platform", between the pilot house and lantern. Scale 1200. It's built, painted, and needs touch-up and weathering. The second is inspired by a small model supposedly built by Gustave Zede, allegedly in 1868, allegedly in consultation with Jules Verne. The building date and Verne association are very questionable, but the model bears a strong resemblance to Verne's description of the Nautilus. I scaled it up, and am adding features such as the angular pilothouse, lantern, platform, etc. It has a large keel, which I feel is necessary since this model has only the center-mounted diving planes and the single rudder. Maybe the keel would make up for the lack of lateral instability this design would probably suffer from. The hull is made from two model rocket nose cones glued together at their bases. Makes for a nice spindle shape. Construction is 75% complete. Scale 1200 Design three is a tip of the hat to the Goff Nautilus, except this one's more shark-like, with a fish-tail, flipper-like fore and aft diving planes, etc. The hull is 2/3 Revel (Aurora) Skipjack, and 1/3 model rocket nose cone. It has a partial interior showing the parlor in the hull - more something that *suggests* an interior than a real one. The hull has been assembled, the kit fins cut off. 1200 scale again. Design four is inspired in part by the Nautilus in the 1961 film The Mysterious Island - what the audience could see of it, anyway. It has a forward collision guard ahead of the trucated-pyramid pilot house, with serrated upper edges. Seen from the bow, the guard forms a vee, with the teeth going up each side. A saw that breaches the hull from underneath is the ideal submarine ram. 1200 scale again. 2/3 Skipjack and 1/3 nose cone again. This one is just some sketches and the necessary parts. I can use my imagination for the underwater portion of the sub, so I designed my own 19th century/kind of art deco tail fins. The sketch looks tres cool. I might come up with others later, but it's these four are it for now. Maybe I'll even finish them. Okamura" Subject Disney Nautilus The SubCommittee has a few photos of Nautilus models at http//www.subcommittee.com/SubComm/photos.cfm. You have to be a member to access all the articles and references, but the few "teaser" shots are impressive. By the way, if you're interested in templates, a small paper Nautilus (and squid) can be downloaded from http//lhvcc.com/egiftshop/ . I can't vouch for 100% accuracy, but photos of the completed model look convincing enough. Good luck! David T.
