I am interested in making a 1/350 nuclear carrier and the choice seems to be Tamiya (Enterprise) or Trumpeter with Nimitz. I like the fit of Tamiya products but have no experience with Trumpeter. Also the cost of both is over $AUD200. How does the Trumpeter compare with the Tamiya quality? Any advice? John Mills Canberra AUS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From JB Subject Need help with deck layout of Spanish battleship PELAYO Hello all, I am slowly going around in ever decreasing circles.... Currently I am engaged in building the Spanish pre-dreadnought PELAYO in 1/700 based on the Jadar resin kit( which has some issues...) I have trawled the english and spanish speaking internet and come up with various views and images of Pelayo, including a couple of interesting deck and overhead views, especially a very intersting deck view on an old postcard on e-b*y USA... BUT! the Jadar 1/700 kit appears to be based on this drawing http//www.battleships.spb.ru/KO/0196/pelayo-big.gif which is from a Russian website dealing with the history of the ship in depth, alas the drawing seems to disagree with most if not all of my available photos from a number of interesting books sent to me by Santi Caro of Spain--THANK YOU. Thank you Darius Mazurowski for your help.... Nevertheless I am still stuck! The kit has cast onto the deck large diameter slightly raised circular areas, the purpose of which and their accurate presence I want to ascertain--- I have not been able to identify them in photos other than on the drawing to which I have linked above... I have not been able to locate a 'trustworthy' drawing of an overhead view to verify --I cannot proceed further with the build until I know if I need to get the Dremel grinder out!! I am gather that WARSHIP no 2 1970 has an article on the Pelayo; I recently aquired a huge collection of Warship starting in 1971- to 1986.... ;^{) does anyone have that issue? could it be scanned? So now I am hoping that one of you chaps will be able to assist sith this quandry -- for now I am back on the YS 1/350 USS Oregon... Thanks in advance JIM BAUMANN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Les Pickstock" Subject Re Remove Duct Tape residue >> Since this is a "nautical forum", I should probably start this with "...this ain't no sh*t..." Regular Peanut Butter will remove MOST tape residue from solid objects, is not harmful to the environment, and after you are done you can make yourself a sandwich with the remainder!!!!! << You've got to be joking! How do you get the peanut butter residue off? Seriously, I assume it the oil in it that does the removing. I found that old fashioned Lighter fluid does the trick too, you may find it in Art supply shop as "Art Clean". Which reminds me, Why is Duct tape like the "Force"?- It has a light side, a dark side and it holds the Universe together. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "roger buckley" Subject Remove Duct Tape residue Peanut butter urrrrrrrrrrrgh --- Sounds like a Martha Stewart hint to me. regards roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Re Duct tape remover Many thanks to the several SMML people who responded to my request for suggestions about removing duct tape adhesive from vinyl siding. I will let SMML know how I made out. In the group of suggestions I received an e-mail from a source I don't recognize, and it did not have a "subject". Having learned (the hard way) to not open unrecognized e-mail, even though in this case it just might be legit and contain yet another suggestion, I have stored it (unopened). I now request that if it did indeed come from a good source the sender retry, using a pertinent "subject". For your information the sender was identified as wresselco@att............. Thanks (I hope). Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Darren Scannell Subject Re Remove Duct Tape residue - not a joke!! As long as the tape residue is still pliable, IE not hard and crusty or powdery, then the absolute BEST thing to remove tape residue is, Wait for it.... MORE tape!!! It works 90% of the time with fresh residue, so give it a try. Take a piece of fresh tape, roll it around your fingers with the sticky side out and press onto the goo. Pull back and do it again. Keep doing this, moving fresh tape over the spot and after 5-10 pulls (or more), it should all be gone. A rolling action helps sometimes also. Make sure you use the same tape!! Other glue backings may not be strong enough. Cheers! Darren Boat content tape on hulls is bad when put in water. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "keith bender" Subject flightdeck padeyes SMMLies, As it occurred to me someone asked a little while ago the diameter of the flightdeck padeys. Aboard the USS Inchon we had the standard 5 bar padeyes, a star shape if you will. Same kind as the big deck carriers have. From point to side they measured 9" diameter. I took this measurement a little while ago while I was aboard her in mothballs in Phily. Doing this knowing that one day I will build a model and photoetch every padeye, all 2600 on the flightdeck. Keith ps, I counted them ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at http//smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at http//apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
