I've been reading this "list" for a long time and have even contributed. That said... someone else asked a RR question and I thought I would throw out mine as well. Several "ship builders" on this list emailed me with great ideas. As such, it would seem the idea to throw out my RR question to the group was a good one. I realize the need to keep the list focussed on its intended purpose, but I appreciate those who indulged me and offered their assistance. Sincerely, Russ Houston ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From chris@libertyship.org Subject Liberty ships >> I just got the Trumpeter 1/350 Liberty Ship kit and a Tom's Modelworks brass detail set for same. I intend to build it as a gift for my father-in-law, who was one of the Naval Armed Guard on U.S.S. Frank B. Linderman (hull number 2529) in WW II. What distinguishing markings did Liberty Ships carry? Did each carry its name painted on the bow and home port on the stern, or were these painted out? Did they carry hull numbers like warships? << Wartime Liberty ships carried no distinguishing marks on the hull. They had wooden name boards up on the flying bridge rail, and these could be flipped over to hide the name. The hull number you cite is a contract number issued by the US Maritime Commission. Ships were also issued yard numbers by the company building them, in the case of the Linderman she was Oregon Ship Building yard number 804. After they entered service merchant ships are generally only referred to by their name. They also have a distinguishing official number (different from the USMC number) to avoid confusion between ships with similar names. These numbers would typically only appear in paperwork (the USMC and yard numbers were put on the ship’s builders plates) and would not be painted on the vessel. Ships participating in a military operation, such as an invasion, were sometimes given temporary ID numbers. These would be displayed on number boards similar to the name boards. Some Liberty ships (less than 10%) were actually commissioned Navy ships, and these did have hull numbers and displayed them according to Navy practice. Please sing out if you'd care to hear more. << Yes, more! Your reminiscences are a real treat to read. Thank you for sharing them! regards, Tim ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Norman Samish" Subject Re Trouble in Trinco (3) - HMS Valiant & the Floating Dock break-up Tony Ireland's WW2 recollections are very interesting - they capture some of the fascination of well-done warship models. Yes, I'd like to hear more - with even more detail. Thanks, Norman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Subject Re Trouble in Trinco I enjoyed reading Tony Ireland's reminiscences of life in the RN in Trincomolee. Would love to hear more of the same. On this same thread an officer I met who was serving on VIRAGO at Trinco in WW 2 told me an amusing story. He was extremely fond of singer Dinah Shore's singing and had all her records. Very much in his cups he was returning one evening to VIRAGO in one of the ship's boats when they were challenged by the nearby flagship. Fast forward to next morning when the flagship made to VIRAGO "The correct response when a boat is challenged is 'passing' - NOT I love Dinah Shore". Michael London ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From sift@comcast.net Subject Liberty Ships When launched Liberty Ships had both name and home port pained on the gray hull in white letters but these were painted out shortly thereafter. There is one exception that I know of (there may be others). The Patrick henry, the"first Liberty," The hull was painted black underwent sea trials on 12/30/41 and then delivered. No doubt she was painted gray ebfore going to sea with name and port painted out. The Liberty ship I sailed on had a name board on the side railings on the deck house with the upper half folded down to hide the name. I am not certain that this was true durinbg war time. You should note that full standardization did not take place until a number of the first ships were built. These early ones varied in vertical and inclined ladder placement, absence of a flag locker, had fewer deckhouse gun tubs, etc. Dave Fisher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From AAA Hobby Supply Subject MV MANARAN Does anybody know of a dutch merchant vessel MV MANARAN during WWII? My uncle served aboard her and says she was similar to a LIBERTY, but had six hatches vice the five of the LIBERTY ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Mike Settle Subject Re Trouble in Trinco >> Sorry this has grown over-long. Please sing out if you'd care to hear more. << Tony, I'm singing, I'm singing. I find your sea stories very interesting. We're happy to announce that he's wrapped it up, and the set is being etched right now. The price will be a bit higher than anticipated, because he's gone right over the top with this one! PE 3529 will consist of 2 frets, which you can view at http//www.whiteensignmodels.com/brochure/images/wembrass/wempe3529a.jpg and http//www.whiteensignmodels.com/brochure/images/wembrass/wempe3529b.jpg In addition, you can dress up your Bismarck or Tirpitz with PE 3565, replacement deck plates http//www.whiteensignmodels.com/brochure/images/wembrass/wempe3565.jpg and PE 3566 Kriegsmarine Light AA Weapons http//www.whiteensignmodels.com/brochure/images/wembrass/wempe3566.jpg We are aware of course that this makes fully fitting out the kit a lot more expensive than we first thought, but the alternative was to miss out a lot of the detail. As a small consolation, we're running an introductory offer. If you order all three sets together and mention this special offer before 11th November, we'll give a GBP 10 discount. Remember, this offer expires 11/11. Without giving away too much, I want to duplicate the Norwegian Sea in 1/700 scale. Do I place the ship model on a base and then do the water? Or vice versa? What about colors? I am thinking waves about 4-6 feet? << Dean, Small scale water can be easily replicated using Artist's Gel Medium that can be found at art and crafts stores worldwide. I produce a "how to" CD that will show you how to make the most realistic water you will ever see as well. It covers everything from 1/700 scale calm seas to 1/350 scale storms sized waves.
