I use Humbrol nr. 66 when I have no other information but I would like to have some variations of color. So anything from torpedoes to target indicators would by appreciated. << The RAF's bombs were a light yellow/buff colour pre-war, and early war. This was replaced by a dark green (probably Dark Green) photos exist showing tails (which were stored separately) in one colour with the body of the bomb another. I suspect the FAA used the same. US bombs were used later in the war, and these were Olive Drab, I believe. The body of torpedoes were natural metal, well oiled to resist corrosion. The warheads may have been black, I cannot be certain. I have heard that practice ones were red, to assist recovery. Graham Boak ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Frank Bowron" Subject Re Anti-torpedo defences and the lack of them As long ago as 1944 Captain Walker used depth charges to successfully defend his ship against an acoustic torpedo fired by U264. Waiting until the torpedo was just 5 yards astern, Walker dropped a "Plaster" pattern set at minimum depth. These exploded almost immediately and successfully detonated the torpedo. It also damaged the ship, breaking all the ship's crockery, lamps and most of valves in the radio/electronics equipment, but even without crockery HMS Starling survived to fight another day. It seems that using depth charges in this way makes a good basis for an active defence against torpedoes.
