Color photos of Korean War Essexs are hard to come by in one only source...I have to sift through many back issues of the TAILHOOKs HOOK magasine, plus numerous hardcovers of assorted titles to find both color and black and white deck and ship scenes. You may have to navigate for several hours through the internet and various websites like NAVSOURCE and Crew Reunion web pages, and going through the Grumman AC web pages to find images. ORISKANY went to Korea with the new island rebuild, a conversion in itself. Many of the 40mm quad tubs were empty, most prevalent being the forward bow units as would have been the mounts on the fantail. USS BONHOMME RICHARD was a late war short hulled ship that you can use the current YORKTOWN II kit. Her island structure and masts were basically unchanged, but the bridge windows were glassed in with overhead awnings in place. Radars would have been upgraded slightly. I believe the 20mm gun galleries were emptied, and the aft starboard 40mm mounts were empty but all the sponsons remained. Colors would have been a haze gray overall with dark blue stained flight deck with yellow dotted striping and yellow 31 fore and aft. Theres much more to this but I dont have my reference books beside me. Theres a chap right now selling some books on the SMML list, one being the Norman Friedman book on Carriers...snap that one up now as that will answer most of your questions. We dont yet have a long hulled 350th ESSEX kit out yet, which the ORISKANY is, so you would have to reconfigure the entire bow plus new island. Thats a lot of whittling and chopping and hacking if you are not experienced. Once the carrier kits are out on the shelves, the airplanes will come. Its tough for a resin manufacturer right now to invest time, expense and sweat in doing up aircraft sets for decks that arent out there in volume yet.. Once the kits are released, the after market stuff goes on and on and on...... RM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "John Rule" Subject HMS Tartar >> In 1944 the destroyer Tartar was scrapped by the Piorun at Milford Haven. Can anybody tell me what month this happened? << I've noticed a few replies to the above email, all noting the scrapping date of HMS Tartar. However, unless I am mistaken, Mr W.R Press Inc is not talking about "scrapping", but is probably talking about "scraping", as being that Piorun was another destroyer, it would have been unlikely to have scrapped HMS Tartar. WRPress are known in addition to their extensive knowledge of warship camouflage, to be a little remiss in the Spelling Dept. Unfortunately I do not have info on the Piorun scraping HMS Tartar. No offence. Sincerely, John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "raymond guy" Subject Late WW11 RN Cruisers G'day Fellow SMMLies. Has anyone any knowledge of or seen a fairly comprehensive set of plans in the market place for one of the following HMS Swiftsure, Superb or HMCS Ontario. I have been on the lookout for a set sometime but have a funny feeling that these ships are still ckassified by the MOD as secret. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ray in Capetown ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Doug Bauer" Subject G7a torpedo I understand both WEM and Kora produce a 172 scale German G7a torpedo...Kora's is quite expensive, while WEM's is very affordable. Does anyone have experience with either of these offerings, and if so, what are your conclusions? Also, where in the States can one purchase WEM or Kora products? Doug Bauer Poway, CA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From AAA Hobby Supply Subject Korean a/c packs For all the Korean War aircraft fans, be aware that the ONLY Korean era CV that can be built from the Trumpeter kit (and only the Franklin kit at that) is the USS Bon Homme Richard - she was the only unmodified short hull to serve. She even retained most of her 40mm and 20mm galleries. As for the aircraft, I think I will go ahead and do them. Let me ask a question tho Do you really want p/e props? Remember, this will raise the price by a substantial margin. What I am looking at for prices Pack #1 $20 6x F9F Pack #2 $25 6x F4U with p/e props Pack #3 $25 6x AD-1 with p/e props Pack #4 $25 w p/e blades & props 2x F2H 2x HO3S 2x AD-4W Here is a phot of Bonnie Dick in 52 http//www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/h97000/h97342.jpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Tom Harrison" Subject Tom's 1/350 Nimitz Sets Just a quick note to let you all know we have started shipping our Nimitz aircraft detailing set. it covers all aircraft provided in the Trumpeter Nimitz kit + spare parts. set 3548 will sell for $17.00 Also, for you large scale builders we have just placed into production several sets in 1/192, 1/144 & 1/96 check our web site for details as to what is in production and future releases. www.tomsmodelworks.com Tom ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From LHDockyard@aol.com Subject Taubman Plans Service As a Customer of Taubman Plans Service Intl., we are contacting you today to tell you that the Company has been purchased by Loyalhanna Dockyard.
