I've got an informative guide on the ESSEX carriers I obtained from the US Naval Institute, but if anyone has any photos (particularly color photos) of an ESSEX in Korean War livery, I'd greatly appreciate it. << Joe, You have to be careful; the Essexes carried different paint and marking schemes, different armaments, and different electronics. You'll need to find pictures of the particular ship you want to model at the time you want to model. One potential source I often use is Navsource http//www.navsource.org/ Even if you don't find color photos, you can at least research the armament and radars. The Naval Historical Center has photos online http//www.history.navy.mil/branches/nhcorg11.htm The US Naval Institute offers photos, with a discount for members http//www.usni.org/ Joseph Poutre ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Graeme Martin Subject My New website New website. Your all welcome to go look at my new website I have posted at http//shipmodels.co.nz/ cheers, Graeme Martin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Kelvin Mok Subject Taubman's Plan Service >> As of today, Taubmansonline.com is back up and operational. We also invite you to check out LoyalhannaDockyard.com. << I think it will be a good idea to drop that registration requirement before one can read the contents. The last thing I want is to be on another database and have to remember another password. Many like me will like to just browse around first without being hasseled. If the products offered are attractive I'll buy. But otherwise I was never there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject Re Korean War Essexs Another good source of photos is to find the reunion web sites of the carriers that took part in the Korean War. Many of the veterans post individual photos that you may not see anywhere else, of their old ship. Mike Donegan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Chris and Kayo Amano-Langtree" Subject HMS Tartar Hi John A check of my records doesn't reveal any such incident. Both Piourun and Tartar were operating out of Plymouth as part of the 10th D/F (from around 6th June for Piorun). Piorun was hit by SS Greyvale on 10th October of that year with only slight damage but Tartar was not involved in that incident. There is no mention of either her or Tartar being at Milford Haven at all during that year. The only time Piorun was in Wales was when she sailed to Pembroke Dock for a refit in April 1945. It is possible that something did happen in 1944 and wasn't recorded or that the records are no longer extant (collision records are very scarce for the Royal Navy) but it would have been at Plymouth not Milford Haven. All the best Christopher Amano-Langtree ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Mccullough, Vincent \(Mission Systems\)" Subject Re Washington, DC Hobby shops Ramses, I recommend Granddad's, on Port Royal Road in Annandale, VA. It's right off of the beltway at the Braddock Road exit. Good supply of ship models, and EXCELLENT supply of paint, tools, materials, etc. Also, since you're new to the area, let me invite you to join the Washington Ship Model Society. We have a brand new website at http//members.cox.net/wsms Its a good group, with members interested in all types of modeling (sticks and strings to steel navy; wood, resin, plastic, cardboard, etc. The club meets monthly, alternating between Virginia and Maryland. The website gives information on the meeting dates and locations. Feel free to drop me a note if you need more information. Vince McCullough Commodore, WSMS Director, NRG ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject Korean Essexes' configurations In addition to Norman Friedman's obvious book, may I recommend Stefan Terzibaschitsch's book on US Carriers (any edition, though most list members will find the English versions published by Conways and USNIP easier to read than the German!). Each carrier is treated individually with an emphasis on during-service mods, though it does not get down to questions like "which guntubs were empty" - the plans are 11250. Relatively easy to find - good hunting John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Tom Saundry Subject HMS Tartar I believe that John Rule is entirely correct in his comment on the scraping by Piorun. Although I am a newbie to this site, I hope it will help to point out that the Piorun was almost certainly a Polish destroyer operating with the RN after the fall of Poland. There were some others too. Kind Regards, Tom Saundry Vancouver, BC CANADA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From brownatfareham@surefish.co.uk Subject Re Late WWII RN Cruisers Profile Morskie produce a book on HMS Swiftsure - Number 42. This includes drawings at both 1400 and 1700 scale. Best regards, John Snyder White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From ALROSS2@aol.com Subject New kit USS MAINE The 1/128 scale kit of MAINE (about 30") that I've been developing for BlueJacket Shipcrafters is almost ready. At the moment, I'm beta testing the instructions while building the display model. I received the first batch of PE sheets today - two .010" frets each about 8" x 12" - and am expecting the .020" and .005" sheets shortly. While this is essentially a traditional wooden kit (machine carved basswood hull and britannia fittings), it includes a lot of laser-cut wood and styrene, cast resin parts, and over 500 pieces of photo-etched brass. There are five sheets of plans and the instruction book will comprise about 50 pages of text and assembly sketches. The resin parts include the 10" turrets, stacks, armored conn, and nine boats. The photo-etch includes all of the superstructure railings, inclined ladders, scroll-work, airports, coal scuttles, deck lights, navigating and flying bridge decks, bridge wings, paneled pilot house, casemate covers, main deck stanchions, catwalk girders, prop blades, rigols, and a lot of other details. The britannia parts include the 10" and 6" gun barrels, vents, capstans, anchors, 1 pdr and 6 pdr guns, masts, searchlights, bitts, chocks, etc. Price has not yet been set. If you have any questions about this kit, drop me an email at aross@bluejacketinc.com.
