Reyna, RN, BSN" Subject Re Korean War Essexes Fellow SMML-lies, Thanks to your outstanding input, it looks like my choice is the USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CV-31). For others so planning to make a Korean ESSEX, here is a superb site for information on the doings of the "Bonnie Dick" http//www.history.navy.mil/branches/richard.htm Among other interesting historical facts on this flat top, I now have the necessary aircraft load out for CV-31's sortie in Oct-Nov 1951 Squadron Aircraft (number) VF-781 F9F-2B (18) VF-783 F4U-4 (15) VF-874 F4U-4 (15) VA-925 AD-3 (14); AD-4 (1) VC-3 F4U-5NL (4) VC-11 AD-4W (3) VC-35 AD-4N (2) VC-61 F9F-2P (3) CAG-102 AD-4Q (2) HU-1 H03S-1 (1) Looks like I can cover this with the existing aircraft, including the great WEM 1/350 F9F and AD aircraft - I'm still working on the H03S Helo. Again, thanks to all - you are all an indispensable resource! Joe Reyna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Tom Saundry Subject HMS Tartar - Epilogue I had no information about the fact that the Piorun was ex-N Class. It is just referred to as a “Polish” destroyers in most Canadian histories. However, I did want to add a final note. First, Canadian Sailors are famous for murdering t he names of ships, including their own. For instance, “Restigouche” became “Rusty Guts”. Regarding the other two Polish destroyers mentioned in the last SMML, the "Blyskawica" served alongside Candian destroyers and commonly called “Bottle of Whisky”!! Kind Regards, Tom Saundry Vancouver, BC CANADA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Chris and Kayo Amano-Langtree" Subject Piorun Hi Bert I tell this story in more detail in my book the Kelly's but briefly Piorun was originally called Nerissa. When the Poles took her over they felt that the name was a bit too feminine and so asked for permission to change the name to something a bit more agressive. It was considered unlucky by the Poles to re-name the ship after Grom (Thunderbolt) as she had been sunk so they chose Piorun (Lightning Bolt) instead. The original Noble became the Dutch destroyer Van Galen. When Piorun returned to the Royal Navy in 1946 she was given the name of Noble not Nerissa as this had already been allocated to another ship. All the best Christopher Amano-Langtree ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Mark McKellar Subject last batch of naval books listed on ebay I'm done with my house cleaning for now, I listed my last batch of naval books listed on ebay.
