One can always count on this group. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Stephen Long" Subject Re CV-31 during Korean Conflict I'm also considering building the USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CV-31) during the Korean conflict. Further to Joe's list, my records show that during the conflict, the carrier carried the following air wing Bon Homme Richard (CV 31) with CVG-102 (10 May 1951-17 Dec 1951) Squadron Aircraft Tail Code VF-781 F9F-2B DVF-783 F4U-4 DVF-874 F4U-4 DVA-923 AD-3/4Q DVC-3 Det G F4U-5NL NPVC-11 Det G AD-4W NDVC-35 Det G AD-4N NRVC-61 Det G F9F-2P PPHU-1 Det HO3S-1 UP Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31) with CVG-7 (20 May 1952-8 Jan 1953) Squadron Aircraft Tail Code VF-71 F9F-2 LVF-72 F9F-2 LVF-74 F4U-4 LVA-75 AD-4 LVC-4 Det 41 F4U-5N NAVC-33 Det 41 AD-4NL SSVC-12 Det 41 AD-4W NEVC-61 Det N F2H-2P/F9F-2P PPHU-1 Det HO3S-1 UP I'm interested in the 2nd list because it lists VC-61 Det N as operating F2H-2P's. Can anyone offer more info on this squadron as here in the UK, details are hard to find. Also, am I right in assumming that she carried measure 13 during this period? My records show that she carried measure 12 from March 1945 but I understand that all US Navy ships were painted in measure 13 after the war. If this is correct, for measure 13, is the deck blue during the Korean Conflict? Regards Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Mccullough, Vincent \(Mission Systems\)" Subject Re LIBERTY SHIP David in Dixie asked >> CAN ANYONE DIRECT ME TO SOME PHOTOS, OR DESCRIBE, HOW AIRCRAFT WERE STORED ON THE DECKS OF LIBERTYS? << David, They were crated up and shipped as deck cargo. If you search the Australian War Memorial database, I'm pretty sure that you will find aerial shots of several ships with aircraft containers as deck cargo. You can find the Memorial collections at http//cas.awm.gov.au Vince McCullough ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From BGMarshall@aol.com Subject Re information on Tacoma class frigates Don If you could get me a hull number or class of hull numbers and a specific period of time you are interested in (if narrower than just World War Two), I can check through the Record Group 19 Bureau of Ships textal records at the National Archives to see if the information is available. Sometimes, the yard departure reports and other shipyard activity reports include information on the number, size and characteristics of the ship's propellers. In addition, the S44 files (propellers) for that particular ship type would probably have the original design information and any design studies for alternatives. Chip Marshall Silver Spring, Maryland ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From AAA Hobby Supply Subject Re LIBERTY SHIP Navsource and the Naval History Center have some online. This photo of Aludra (AK-72) shows 4 F4F-4s and 2 LCMs as deck cargo. It looks like they were simply tied down atop the cargo hatches. http//www.navsource.org/archives/09/0913007201.jpg James Corley AAA Hobby Supply www.aaahobby.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject Seattle Post-Intelligencer http//seattlepi.nwsource.com/printer/ap.asp?category=1103&slug=Atlantis%20Discovery%20Claim Regards, John Kutina ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject Seattle Post-Intelligencer http//seattlepi.nwsource.com/printer/ap.asp?category=1501&slug=Titanic%20Ballard Regards, John Kutina ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From chris@libertyship.org Subject Liberty Ship The aircraft were usually stored up at the level of the hatch tops. The most detailed information I have come across is for P-47s, so I will describe that setup. The aircraft themselves were shipped minus the tail surfaces and propellers, with all opening covered with fitted covers. They were arranged to get three per hatch. Two were faced fore and aft tail to tail, offset to one side. A third ran athwartships, with its after fuselage tucked between the wings of the other two. The main gear would be blocked in with wooden framework to prevent shifting, while the aft end of the fuselage was supported by a cradle. These rested on large wooden timbers that ran across the hatch, and were secured by bolting them between pieces of steel angle welded to the hatch combing. Where a landing gear support extended out past the edge of the hatch a metal platform was welded to the deck. The aircraft were secured using a bunch of cables, many of which were secured to padeyes installed to fit the cargo. All of this welding of fixtures to secure the cargo was common practice- the padeyes and other supports would be knocked off after the cargo was unloaded. This is just an example of one way it was done- there were variations between loads, even for the same type of aircraft. It appears that the way aircraft were broken down and packaged for shipping was standardized, but how they went on the ship depended to some extent on who was doing it. If you are looking to represent this in 1/350 scale Tom’s Modelworks is working on a set that will have P-47s and P-38s, including photoetched details.
