The Trumpeter NIMITZ as we have it now is as she/they looked in 1975, and could probably double up as the EISENHOWER in 1980, but the Ike lost a couple bridle catchers at that time. The NIMITZ is good for a 1975-80ish CVN. Bear in mind that Trumpeter is planning 3 new releases of NIMITZ variants, one of these, yet un named, will be the full upgrade version with new radars, new CIWS sponsons, new aircraft types .... but that wont be till next year sometime.....even so, they could plan on re releasing the current CVN 68 as CVN 69 and just change instructions box art and markings. For your information, though, have the perfect reference material for you as I am marketing a PHOTO CD ROM on 4 NIMITZ class carriers...just go to Steelnavy.com Whats New column and scroll down till you find Rusty Whites review on the picture CD....., covering randomly CVN 68, 69, 73 and 74, with early and late shots of these in PDF format. No one knows right now whether the next CVN kit by Trumpy will be the upgraded version so we may have a loooooooooong wait. Building it as she looked in 75 and 76 would mean a far more colorfull deck of birds and some nostalgic ones at that. George Oh from Sydney, Australia, here. Ref SMML 2689 item on the vacform 1/72-scale WWII IJN Midget sub from http//www.donsmodelworks.com/wmprods/images/wmjs001.jpg I bought one of these and am quite impressed with the kit. It builds into the sub that was captured after it, and four others, attempted to raid Pearl Harbour in conjunction with the (in)famous air attack. I posted Don's Model Works photos of the Midget subs (there were three) that raided Sydney Harbour on ther night of 31 May 1942. The Sydney three had some obvious differenced from the Pearl five - different nose rings, bow net-cutter and buttress in front of the conning tower. No promises, but Don's Model Works may later include the white metal parts in the kit so that a Sydney raider could be made as an alternate. 2. The price was quite reasonable, and the delivery via the US Postal system was very quick. George, out. Regards, John Kutina ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "ARTHUR BOAK" Subject Re WW2 RN Barrage Balloon >> Does anyone know the size of a WWII Royal Navy Barrage Balloon? I presume that they were available in only one size. They were filled with a light gas (hydrogen which is expolsive or helium which is expensive - any info on which?) and sent aloft, tethered to the ship (usually a cargo ship) by a steel cable. The intent was to provide a hazzard for low-flying aircraft. This ensured that an enemy aircraft could not attack from too low a level, thus (hopefully) reducing its effectiveness. Barrage balloons are very prominent in photos of ships in convoy, even D-Day convoys. I ask, because my intent is to eventually convert (revert?) a Tamiya 1/700-scale Bogue Escort (aircraft)carrier back into a cargo ship fitted with catapult and Hawker Hurricane fighter on the bow, and a barrage balloon (probably scratch-built out of polystyrene) held aloft above the waist or stern (by a thin piano wire). I'm pretty sure that no balloons are available as an after-market product. << 1/700 naval barrage balloons are available in Skywave's Beachhead set. I do not know if they were the same size as any use by the RN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Subject Re RN Carrier deck colours Hi Chris, The lighter colour is Admiralty Dark Grey (Colourcoats M 16), and the darker is Extra Dark Sea Grey (Colourcoats ACRN 02).
