Is it a Hobby-fan product perhaps? http//www.legendshobbies.com/hobby-fan.htm http//www.legendshobbies.com/afv/hf040.jpg I have a question regarding the SMS Konig if anyone can help. Regarding the white circles painted on both one forward and one aft turret roof for aerial recognition, and when they were added. The only information that I can find on them is that they were not present in 1914 and were added later or possibly quite late in the war. I am taking this to mean post Jutland. Is this correct? Regards & thanks in advance. David. UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "John Snyder" Subject Re USS LANGLEY CV1 painting scheme Hi Joey, During the 1930s, LANGLEY would have had all vertical surfaces painted #5 Standard Navy Gray, all steel decks painted #20 Standard Deck Gray, the flight deck stained with Mahogany Flight Deck Stain, and the underwater hull painted in Norfolk 65-A Antifouling Red, with a black boot-topping. Flight deck markings would have been Chrome Yellow, which was also the color of the upper surface of the top wing on the biplanes. I believe the fuselages and other surfaces were painted with aluminum dope. Each carrier's air group had its own tail color; I don't remember LANGLEY's, but someone else here will undoubtedly come up with it for you. You'll find all the colors you need accurately matched in our Colourcoats enamels US01, #5 Standard Navy Gray US02, #20 Standard Deck Gray US14, Norfolk 65-A Antifouling Red US15, Mahogany Flight Deck Stain C02, Matt Black C04, Matt Aluminum ACUS11, Chrome Yellow Best regards, John Snyder White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "John Snyder" Subject Re Phalanx CIWS Hi Phil, That kit was the work of Rusty White at Flagship Models (httpflagshipmodels.com). I don't know whether it's still in production, but a visit to his website should tell the tale. Best regards, John Snyder White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Jeffry Fontaine" Subject Re phalanx ciws "Phil Fuss" asked about the Vulcan Phalanx kit and who made it. There are three kits available, one being out of production that was produced by none other than Rusty White of Flagship models. His CIWS retailed for ~$100.00. The other two kits are available from Hobby Fan and they retail for $199.00. I was really hoping to get one of the kits that Rusty White had produced but they are no longer available through retail channels. This left me with the last option of purchasing the Hobby Fan kit for just under $200.00 through a mail order link called Sprue Brothers. I remember the Flagship models kit came in yellow resin, the Hobby Fan kit is done in gray resin also includes a platform section. Let me know if your friend wishes to dispose of the kit, I might be inclined to relieve him of his burden if the price is right... regards, Jeffry Fontaine Bremerton, Washington ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Rusty White Subject Phalanx CIWS >> One of our club members has a 1/35 scale Phalanx CIWS model. He cannot remember who made the kit or where he obtained it. None of the rest of us has ever seen the kit. Does anyone out there recall such a kit? Even better, if anyone knows where to obtain one, a couple of our club members would be interested. << Phil, Flagship Models put out a limited run CIWS in 1/35 a few years ago but I since taken it out of production and sold the master patterns to Meteor productions. I also heard that another model company issued a kit in the same scale and still be in production. From what I hear it was pretty expensive. Hope this helps. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. Woodruff" Subject USS LANGLEY CV1 painting scheme Joey Your F2Bs should have red tails if they belong to VF-2 (Fighting Two) The should have aluminum fuselages and chrome yellow upper wings. the http//www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/g100000/g185915.jpg http//www.navsource.org/archives/02/01.htm http//members.cox.net/navymatchbook/CV1.htm http//www.hazegray.org/navhist/carriers/images/usa/cv1.jpg http//www.steelnavy.com/ISWLangleyDJ.htm I hope this helps Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Randy Ward Subject Re phalanx ciws Phil, Flagship Models made a CIWS kit. 'Don't know if it's still available, but it should be easy enough to find out. Cap'n Randy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From KELVIN MOK Subject USS Hobson Camoflage Colors >> Another question I had always wanted to ask. How effective were camo schemes on ships? << At surface naval engagement distances, even at pre-radar times, it would have been impossible for the human eye to distinguish how pretty a ship's paint scheme was. At best a suitable paint color, eg white on S-Bootes, may allow a smaller ship to escape detection at a closer range to be of some advantage. But for larger ships, my perception is that no matter how they were painted they would have been detected long before either the observer's ship or the attacking ship's guns could be in range. Similarly no amount of camouflage can disguise a ship's wake to escape eyeball detection from an aircraft. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "Tom Detweiler" Subject Rephalanx ciws Phil F. I am fairly certain that Verlinden made a resin 1/35 CIWS Phalanx a number of years back. I remember seeing it advertised. The scale would be right for Verlinden, as well. Tom Detweiler in Grass Valley, CA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "Ed Grune" Subject USS Langley Paint Scheme Joey asked about the paint scheme on the USS Langley during the '30s The hull, superstructure, deck fittings, and all of the latticework that supports the flight deck was Standard US Navy Gray #5. The steel decks below the flight deck were Standard US Navy Deck Gray #20. The flight deck was mahogany-stained fir, most likely with chrome yellow markings. Steel fittings on the flight deck (edges arresting cabble fittings, hatches, etc.) were Standard #20. The aircraft would be in aluminum dope with a chrome yellow upper wing. See the FAQ section on aircraft markings at the US Naval Historical Center http//www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq2-1.htm Is your kit the Iron Shipwright Langley? That kit comes with a colored painting guide. Contact Jon Warneke or Ted Paris at Iron Shipwright and ask them to send you one. Ed Grune Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "David Judy" Subject Re Langley paint Joey, Check www.steelnavy.com go to gallery then aircraft carriers. I have photos of the Langley I built. may be of help. The hull is Model Master standard navy grey 1937, the flight deck is M/M mahogany. the planes are silver w/ yellow wing tops. The kit should have a color sheet included, but the colors are wrong, except for the planes. In Christ, Dave Judy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From Joel Labow Subject 1/35 CIWS Kits I am aware of two kits of the CIWS in 1/35 scale. One was produced by Flagship Models and is no longer in production the other was by HobbyFan in Japan. I have some photos of the completed Flagship kit contact me off list if interested.
