We've had to make a couple of minor alterations to the newsletter and stop sending it for a while. This was due to AOL's blanket ban of the ISP I'm using, as SMML was being considered spam. The only other alternative was to drop all the aol subscibers and wait for the problem to solve itself eventually. As it stands SMML will be going out to AOL subscibers via a seperate mail server for the short term while we wait for aol to drop the ban. In the meantime, I will be looking at more permanant ways of stopping this happening again. My apologies for any inconvienence this may have caused. Regards, Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Matthew Subject KGV anchor question Good day, Not entirely trusting the paint scheme delivered in the Tamiya instructions, but wondered what colour to make the parts on the deck where the anchors lay...Also, what size chain would be best? And will pre-blackened be best? Think that is it for now, so many parts to these ships trying to make it authentic is quite a challenge, although a lot of fun ). Matt ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Robert P. Mattis" Subject WEM Paint Problems Has anyone had problems recently with the WEM paint line. I have generally had good luck with them, but twice in the last year I have had problems with paint consistency. Two batches of Haze Grey and Navy Green have been oily, thin, had poor coverage, dried satin not flat and the Navy Green even seemed to have a different base. This was after 5 minutes on an electric paint shaker so I think I have eliminated that as a possible cause. Bob Mattis ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Allen Stevens" Subject Re Camoflage colours Kelvin I work for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in the UK and we have experimented with several color schemes over the years. About 10 years ago we tried a yellow wheelhouse (instead of the traditional orange) on an experimental boat. Unfortunately on trials (and I saw this for myself) the bright yellow boat, at a distance of about a mile virtually blended into the fog! they could see us with our orange wheelhouse but we had to use the radar to find them. Dazzle paint schemes were primarily designed to break up the ships image not to hide it, a good example is a false bow painted aft of the fore peak with a false bow wave to a submarine skipper it would give a false indication of speed and length of ship which could totally s***w up his target solution. again with the zig zag schemes it was sometimes difficult to decide which way a ship was going as to wake even the most modern ship creates a wake which can be spotted from the air (damned wingy thingies!) I am sure a xerox copy would be sufficient. If anyone can help, I'll pass his name and address so the instructions could go straight to him and not through me. Cost of copying will be covered. Thanks, Hank Forget the movie "Pearl Harbor;" remember the real Pearl Harbor -- today (December 7). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Rusty White Subject Paging Bob Steinbrunn! Based on info available from DANFS, it seems that one of the "Crater Class" ships AK70-79 would be the best bet. Can anyone tell me if the Jeremiah O'Brian kit is close to one of these vessels in fit? Also, there are only a few low quality pictures available on Navsource of these vessels. What would be the appropriate colors/measure for these ships? Thanks in Advance, Bruce Bullock, Lompoc, Calif ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From Gary Subject LCT model at Telford Does anyone know if this is a kit or scratchbuilt? If it is a it, what manufacturer? It looks to be 1/72. Thanks!! Gary Schurr ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From andrew jones Subject Ship questions - USS Constellation VC-64 & Tarntual II Hi all I have the following questions about the following ships & their kits My ship build plan for next year is the following kits for a display day that APMA is having next year..wars other than WW2 & WW1 during the 20th Century 1) Mirage "Tarantuala II" I am thinking of doing either the Iranian or the Iraqi version a) Did these ships fight during the Iran / Iraq war?.. Did the Iraqi's use these shps during the invasion of Kuwait? b) The antenna Part 40..the box art shows 2 antenna's on the step in front of the bridge, but the box art shows 2..which is correct? 2) I have the ARII VC-64 Constellation in 1/800 scale Am thinking of doing her during her deployment in the Vietnam war a) is this kit close enough to represent her during the Vietnam war...the kit has her armed with Terrier missiles b) Air group.. did she have F-4, A7, A-6, SH-3 & Ra-5? c) figures in 1/800 anything close enough to use?? d) Colour scheme..what is the closest humbrol match for her deployment? Thanks in advance Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From "Rick Nelson" Subject 1/72 Gato class submarine I see that the 1/72 Gato Class submarine model listed on eBay (5941788246) has come down in price to $550.00 US! It doesn't have a flight deck. It doesn't have much of its bulkhead insulation. But it soon will have a new home. The decommissioned aircraft carrier Oriskany is set to arrive in Pensacola around Dec. 18, a major step in the process that will send it to the sea floor as an artificial reef. The sinking is to take place in June, 25 miles south of Pensacola Pass. "Over the past few months, there were several times when my faith was tested, but I tried to keep the faith,'' said Robert Turpin, chief of Escambia County Marine Resources. "I just tried to focus on my role in assisting the technical work and issues so that it could come here.'' Oriskany was scheduled to be scuttled in August, when it was expected to attract divers and anglers from around the globe, pumping millions of dollars into the Northwest Florida economy. But several environmental issues delayed the event, keeping the flattop docked in Corpus Christi, Texas, while the area braced for and recovered from Hurricane Ivan. Turpin recently toured the ship with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials and was pleased with the progress. Workers removed Oriskany's wooden flight deck to reduce an estimated 700 pounds of polychlorinated biphenyls, an industrial compound known to cause cancer in animals. "I wouldn't say the ship was naked,'' Turpin said. "But (it was without) a lot of what I would call questionable materials that could cause entanglements with diving.'' Oriskany will take temporary residence at the Port of Pensacola, secured next to the Bayfront Auditorium. In the coming months it will undergo final sink preparations while environmental and military officials continue to work on environmental agency disposal permits. Assistant Port Director Leon Walker said the port is 90 percent recovered from storm damage and should have no problem accommodating the 888-foot ship. "We're hopeful to get it in and get the work done so we can sink it as soon as possible,'' Walker said. << ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From "The code" Subject Needfull things for Trumpter Nimitz Hello list..There is still a list?? Haven't seen a post in a few days now.. I was looking at my Nimitz kit and got to thinking about things I would like on her to make her look like her 1977-1978 cruise with air wing 8.. We had a fire truck with a light foam cannon during this cruise,.. I will probably have to scratch that.. The kit comes with only 4 aircraft tugs ,, I heard that someone is making decals for the early Nimitz.. We need for several of the squadrons.. Drop tanks for most of the birds ...300 gal.. I suppose you could make from a fat round tooth pick then cast more... The elevator doors on the hanger are not right.. We had armored steel doors that rolled across these large opening...It was rare to see them closed.. there is an inner recess that is the same shape as the opening into the hangers that these doors came out of.. Looking forward to seeing all the brass that will be coming out for her... I just went and spent 80.00 on more aircraft for the deck.. I even got some of the Tamaya EA6-bs as this is a glaring omission for the airwing .. The trumpeter aircraft are much nicer than these older molds.. I know toms makes brass for the aircraft I will have to check them out.. I hope that those decals are from this time frame as I found out much later ..this deployment of Nimitz 1977-1978 was the last of any Carrier with an all Hi-Vis airwing ... I'm sure I will think of more later.. cheers Bill C ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From Steve Bryson Subject 67 Years Ago Today - December 12, 1937 Hello, While most are familiar with the events of 63 years ago on December 7, 1941, often overlooked are the events of 67 years ago on December 12, 1937. At approximately 138 pm on that date, planes of the Japanese naval air service bombed and sank the U.S. Navy gunboat, USS Panay, near Nanking, China. The USS Panay was one of the small gunboats that patrolled the Yangtze River during the 1920s and 1930s. Two sailors and an Italian journalist aboard the USS Panay were killed in this "Prelude to Pearl Harbor". In rememberance of the men of the U.S. Navy's Yangtze Patrol. I'm currently building the Combrig 'Leitenant Burakov' and want to do her in the wartime scheme rather than the usual pristine white. My intention is to do a 'Burakov/Taku' for each of the users, which will entail me making more of them than were actually built(!); original Chinese at time of capture, RN, French and German. Can anyone suggest schemes for the French 'Takou' or the German SMS 'Taku'? Sources of reference would be helpful too. Also, the two best photos I have of the class so far (the Combrig box and HMS 'Taku' in White's 'China's Steam Navy') both show a large squarish pipe hanging over the side amidships, albeit on opposite sides in each picture. It's obviously some kind of pump outflow, but anyone have more specific details? Like where it goes in to?
