I have generally had good luck with them, but twice in the last year I have had problems with paint consistency. Two batches of Haze Grey and Navy Green have been oily, thin, had poor coverage, dried satin not flat and the Navy Green even seemed to have a different base. This was after 5 minutes on an electric paint shaker so I think I have eliminated that as a possible cause. << Bob, I've found that regardless of how long you shake the tins, you need to stir, stir, stir - then stir. Stirring for at least a minute to a minute and a half has eliminated the satin finish and watery coverage, at least for me. HTH Martin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Sab1156@aol.com Subject Re WEM Paint Problems Dear Bob Mattis, When WEM start selling the KM paints I ordered them all and experienced the same problems like you. They covered poorly and always dried glossy,so I finally stopped using them. Best regards Detlef Hartwig ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject British armed forces - Navy's newest 'cutting-edge' assault ship enters service http//news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=1034&id=1416092004 Regards, John Kutina ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Pirie and Kathy" Subject Re Port Arthur Colors While I am sure others will happily join in, I'm not sure there is a good answer to your question. Falk Pletcher long ago pointed out on this list that the dark olive green used by the Russians was made up from the stock of yellow ochre, white, and black (or soot) the fleet had on hand. Since this color was not likely to have been made to a specific formula, I suggest any dark olive paint will do. Here in the US, I have used a model railroad color, pullman green, plus a bit of white on my Ulsan-era Gromoboi. The variously described khaki, or cinnamon, color is more difficult. The presumption is the destroyers were painted so they would be less visible against the shoreline. I have seen a color used in MODERN sources that looks like one of the FS light earth colors, and I have seen a color that looks like the old Humbrol bleached khaki. I stress these were in current sources. I know of no contemporary source that tells us how the original color was mixed. Perhaps, yellow ochre with a touch of red ochre? That would pretty easy to come by even in a town under siege. I would think about any light, earthy brown would do. Let us know what you decide. Pirie Sublett San Diego, CA, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "rtorgeson" Subject Constellation CVA-64 Andrew, The two cruises to Vietnam that I made on Constellations in 1964 and 1966 and also a number of others after I left the ship can be built from the 1/800 Arii kit. The Terrier missile battery is correct but with the aircraft you listed a time after the 1966 cruise would be right. In1966 we still had A-4 Skyhawks but no A-7s Roger Torgeson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Mac Henry" Subject USS Jarrett FFG-33 and Operation Earnest Will Does anyone have any photos of USS Jarret during Operation Earnest Will in September 1987? This was the operation where Kuwaiti tankers were reflagged in the Persian gulf. I'm interested in Jarrett because army AH-6 helicopters operated off her in the capture of an Iranian landing craft, Iran Ajr (which was being used as minelayer). Iran Ajr was supposedly built in Japan, but I haven't been able to find any pictures or drawings of this ship on the internet. I've found that Jarrett was completed as a short-hull OHP class frigate operating Seasprites. She was later converted to a long-hull version with Seahawks. The Jarrett website says the ship was reconfigured in 1989, but I'm not sure if the conversion to a long hull is what this reconfiguration refers to. So here's a list of my questions 1) Was Jarrett a short-hull or long-hull during September 1987? 2) Does anyone have any photos or line drawings of the Iran Ajr? Thanks. Mac ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Daniel Taylor" Subject Re LCT model at Telford Gary Schurr asked >> Does anyone know if this is a kit or scratchbuilt? If it is a kit, what manufacturer? It looks to be 1/72. << I confess knowledge of the craft as I built the master for Accurate Armour. It is a 1/76 multi-media kit (mainly resin and P/E brass) of the mid to late production LCT IV. Provided with the kit are transfers for six craft on and around D-Day for British, Canadian and US beaches. They are due to update their website this coming weekend with colour pictures of the model I have built from the kit. The site currently shows examples of the kit in an unpainted state. Their site is www.accurate-armour.com If landing craft are generally of interest to you then you may like to know that I have recently completed a follow up kit of the LCF based on the above craft, and should be completing an LCT 5 in the next few weeks. Both should become available during the first quarter of 2005. Additionally, I have been building smaller landing craft for Milicast in the same scale. These include LCA, LCM1, LCM3, LCM6 and will soon be joined by LCPL (UK and US styles) and LCR. I don't have their web address to hand, but shall post it tomorrow in case it might be of help. Any other questions, just ask. Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "Michael Eisenstadt" Subject Wanted Airfix Beam Engine Kit (O/T) All Would anyone out there (in the U.S.) have a complete and unassembled Airfix Beam Engine kit in good condition that they would be willing to sell? If so, please contact me. Thanks! Mike Eisenstadt ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From chris Subject WTB in Australia Hasegawa 1/700 South Dakota/Alabama Hi All, I was wondering if anyone (preferably in Australia) has a spare 1/700 Hasegawa South Dakota or Alabama kit thaey would wish to sell?
