Joseph Poutre ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "WEM" Subject Re WEM Paint Problems Thanks Martin... ...for the "Stir, Stir, Stir" reminder. You are absolutely right! The problems described CAN be remedied by stirring. A paint shaker is no substitute. If a tin of enamel paint has been sitting around for a while, it must be stirred extremely thoroughly, as shaking a tin horizontally is an extremely ineffective way of displacing the solids from the base. After this stage, there is certainly no harm in using a mechanical paint shaker. All The Best, Caroline Snyder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "John Rule" Subject Paint Problems With regard to the problem with the WEM paints. As a general rule with any paint, it always requires thorough mixing. I usually find that this has to be done best through a combination of stirring and shaking. I usually stir with something with sharp edges, and sometimes if the paint hasn't been used for a long time it requires poking and bashing too. When shaking, I put in a couple of ball bearings to beat up the pigment. It might be even better to use something more angular in shape. Powered shakers are great. Powered stirrers are even better. I find this all works very well on the oil based paints. The only difficulty sometimes is with bright red which always seems to take 10 times as much mixing as other colours, but fortunately you don't need it very often for warship models. Sincerely John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Reynold.Oh@defence.gov.au Subject Re LCT model at Telford G'day, all. George Oh from Sydney, Australia here. I was interrested in the Gary Schurr/Daniel Taylor exchange on the LCT. For those interrested, the Aust Defence Force (ADF) has LCH's (Landing Craft, Heavy) with RAN crews and LCM8's (Landing Craft, Medium, type 8) with Army crews. The LCH's are commissioned ships (= with names) of the RAN. Only one unit in the Army runs the LCM8 - 10 FSB (Force Support Battalion) in Townsville, with a detachment in Darwin. Detachments seen in Bougainville, on RAN ships, or elsewhere, are on-loan to the RAN. The LCM8's have recently been upgraded by the expansion of the wheel-house. 10 FSB also operates the modern replacement for the WWII DUKW (= Army Duck = amphibious truck = boat with wheels) - LARC's (= Lighter, Amphibious, Resupply, Cargo). For Daniel Taylor, I know that LCT = Landing Craft, Tank, but what is a LCPL and a LCR. I do recall that there were LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle or personnel to Americans) = LCA (Landing Craft, Assault to British) able to carry 36 troops from ship to shore. LCI (Landing Craft, Infantry) able to carry 200 troops from shore to shore. It disembarked then via 2 x bow-mounted gangways - no bow door/ramp. LCT (Landing Craft, Tank) able to carry 6 medium tanks. Some launched DD (= Duplex Drive) or "swimming" tanks instead of landing them on-shore. LCT(R) or LCR (Landing Craft, Rockets), an area bombardment vessel used on D-Day. This LCT was fitted with many rocket projectors each automatically reloaded (in seconds) by a gravity-feed magazine. It stood just off-shore and pumped-out very impressive barrages of 5" rockets to saturate a target area with explosives. Why an LCT? Because its well deck could be kept flooded with sea-water to take away the heat from the rockets. This is the model that I'm hanging-out for. I fear I'll have to scratch-build one, & I stink without pre-formed parts. LCG(L) (Landing Craft, Guns) fitted with 2 x 4.7" cannons for direct (= aimed) fire support. LCS(S) LCS(M) (Landing Craft, Mortars) fitted with Mortars, machine guns &/or smoke generators. LCT(SP) that carried self-propelled guns that fired from the ship, were eventually landed, and then continued to fire in support of the troops. Note the gaps in my knowledge/research. Admittedly, the vessels underwent modifications (both local and sanctioned) by the addition of firepower &/or other fittings. Some vessels had a bow door that lowered to form the ramp. Others had gangways on or flanking the bows, that lowered like a castle drawbridge (strictly for disembarking troops). A comprehensive write-up (with drawings & photos?) of all of the permutations, combinations, types and classes of Landing Craft would undoubtedly fill several volumes. As usual, a wealth of information can be found on the internet under "landing craft". The ultimate is the US Marines system of 25 troops riding ashore in a swimming armoured tracked vehicle called a LVTP7 (Landing Vehicle Tracked, personnel), later renamed AAVP7A1's (Amphibious Assault Vehicle, Personnel), supported by troops landed from helicopters, and backed-up by aircraft (jets and choppers) from their Assault Carrier mother-ship. I wonder what their next vehicle, the AAAV (Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle) will look like? George, out. TX ends..................... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Loren Perry Subject Re WEM Paint Problems From "Martin Quinn" >> I've found that regardless of how long you shake the tins, you need to stir, stir, stir - then stir. Stirring for at least a minute to a minute and a half has eliminated the satin finish and watery coverage, at least for me. << From Sab1156@aol.com >> When WEM start selling the KM paints I ordered them all and experienced the same problems like you. They covered poorly and always dried glossy,so I finally stopped using them. << Bob and Detlef - While I have not yet tried the WEM paints, I have learned over the years that some hobby paints (Humbrol and Floquil come to mind) do not respond well enough to just shaking prior to use. Instead, they have to be physically stirred with a stick, and stirred thoroughly. The problems you described exactly match the problems I was having with these paints until I started stirring them, and then the paints performed perfectly. Try this before you give up on WEM paints. I've seen too many fine models built and painted with WEM paints to believe that they are inherently flawed.
