May you all have a wonderful 2005 in which you get plenty of time to enjoy your family, friends and of course, ship modelling. Cheers Shane and Lorna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From John Mianowski Subject 1/350 ship motorizing components >> In addition to the PE and hyperrealistic 1/350-scale ships I'm building, I'm also building a 1/350 and box-scale RC 'fleet' for my girlfriend's son, and I'm finding that components are NOT easy to come by. I've scavenged older kits for gearboxes -- which seem to be the Achilles' heel of this whole project -- can anyone direct me here? Is there a better way? Do Tamiya or another of the 1/350 kit producers have a 'parts line' from which I can purchase gearboxes and other unique-to-model-ship components for R/C? << Look for parts, etc. designed for use in Ant-weight robotics. This is a subset of robot combat where the participants are limited to 16 oz. Needless to say, there are some mighty small components that have been developed for this including gearboxes, small receivers, servos, speed controls, etc. JM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Friedrich Kappes" Subject Identify ships Hello and Merry Christmas!!! Is somebody of you able to identify some of these ships http//picpage7.tripod.com/identify.html Happy New Year!!!!! Friedrich The FriedrichFiles http//takeoff.to/friedrichfiles ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Steve Singlar Subject Re Trouble in Trinco (4) - HMS Valiant and A.F.D.28 Thank you for the great follow up on the HMS Valiant story - fascinating! Merry Christmas to all. May your stocking be filled with scale ship kits. Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From David Wells Subject Re CC LEE Will wrote >> I've noticed some CC Lee kits of late on Ebay and elsewhere -- one was a 1/400 Graf Spee that certainly looks like the discontinued Heller kit; another was the P&O "Oriana", which looks to be the same size as the '60's - era Revell offering. Anyone know anything about CC Lee out of China? Did they really buy up all those old moulds? Is their product any good at all (I'm reading mixed reviews)? << I don't know all that much, but I noticed that some of their offerings looked like old Arii and Otaki molds. I'd never heard that they'd put out an Oriana. Revell & Heller are not noted for selling off any of their molds, but anything is possible. Maybe Lee is just leasing some of the molds. Or Lee could be just rebranding/repackaging Heller & Revell kits. (unlikely though it seems) Hard to tell from here. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Wells with our bloody ships today" | Adm. D. Beatty, May 31, 1916 | http//home.att.net/~WellsBrothers/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "John Rule" Subject Narvik 1940 Can anyone tell me what the funnel markings of the 8th Destroyer Flotilla were in May of 1940. Did each ship in the flotilla have different markings or did they all display the same striping? I'm still trying to identify the camouflaged ship on the cover of the book "Naval Operations of the Campaign in Norway April - June 1940". I ordered 8x10 copies of two photos when I visited the IWM in November. Both photos include a destroyer wearing a dazzle camouflage of the type worn by the ex Brazilian destroyers. I believe that the destroyer shown in each of the photos is one of the ex Brazilian ones, in fact Iam fairly sure it is the same one. The photo which was used in the book noted above shows an army bofors gun and crew at action stations on the shore, with several transports and a cruiser which I believe may be Effingham in the background. the cruiser is painted in AP 507A overall. The second photo shows troops being disembarked from various coasters and fishing boats. The camouflaged destroyer is in the background. One of the fishing boats has a large sign above its cabin with the words partially obscured "Mu___ell Moteren". It appears that the troops may have seen some action, as one of the coasters displays a red cross flag on its bridge and there is an ambulance on the pier. I have tried to do a detailed scan of the photo and can cofirm with a degree of certainty that the photo was taken at Harstad. There is a life ring hanging on a lamp standard with a 7 letter word ending in "stad". Anyway back to my original question, which perhaps would be better worded, "What destroyer flotilla had markings on the aft funnel white/black/white?". Sincerely, John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From JOHN CURRIE Subject Re Israeli Ship Question Hi all, John there are a couple of small pics on these two links, hope they help, http//www1.idf.il/Navy/Site/Templates/controller.asp?lang=HE&fid=44014&did=44666 http//www1.idf.il/Navy/Site/Templates/controller.asp?lang=HE&fid=44014&did=44672 Hope everyone has a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Regards John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Francis Macnaughton" Subject Re Landing Craft - LCT5 Chris, If Tim Perry and Dan Taylor have left any gaps in your desires for Landing Craft (and they lead the field) then perhaps you might be interested in the plan for a LCT 5 in RN service at D-day that I did in 1/72nd? This was published via Marine Modelling International in the September and October issues this year. The plan is MAR3113 and although intended for RC could easily be done to waterline if required. Their website is www.traplet.com or phone 01684 588599 (I don't get any commission - honest!). You can also get a reasonably detailed drawing of the LCT 5 as originally built free at http//ww2lct.org/mk5/images/schematic-Mk5.jpg Hope that gets you going. Francis Macnaughton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From beyondsun@mindspring.com Subject Re Israeli Ship Question >> Looking for any photos of "The Jewish State" later renamed "Matzpen" which began life as the "USCG Northland WPG-49. Any Isreali ship > modellers out there with any photos or sources for photos? << Here you go, buddy http//www.uscg.mil/hq/g-cp/history/Northland_1927.html I just Googled this; there's undoubtedly more...
