Good morning Shane, I am embarking on the USS Nimitz Trumpeter kit and have a nagging question (amongst others) about the deck configuration. I am hopeful someone on the list can provide me with a definitive answer. I feel a bit stupid for asking, having been aboard the Nimitz on several occasions and for the ‘91 Tiger Cruise. However, after several days research, using my own photos and records, I am unable to locate a definitive answer to a research question I have about the USS Nimitz deck configuration. I am building a scale model of the ship, using the 1/350th scale Trumpeter kits which was originally released. I have visited the Nimitz several times over the period during which she was stationed at PSNS Bremerton. My question is pretty basic and I don’t need anything even remotely classified or even sensitive. It is about the layout and rough dimensions of the no. 1 and 2 catapult tracks on the flight deck. The way the kit deck has been engineered, appears to me to be incorrect. I’ve now looked a number of photos and believe there may just be some small bit of offset to the two forward (no. 1 and 2) catapults. But I certainly don’t ever remember seeing this difference in real time. The kit portrays these two catapult tracks roughly with the no. 1 track being more forward in its relative position (to the no. 2 track), meaning that the no. 1 track is a couple of feet more forward toward the bow, than the no. 2 cat. I am not looking for actual dimensions or measurements of any type. Just, is catapult track no. 1 more forward in it’s relative deck position than that of catapult no. 2? Does anyone have a clear vertical photo of the flight deck which clearly demonstrates this positioning? If you can scan it, it would be most helpful. This seemingly insignificant information will allow me to more accurately approach my modeling effort for the flight deck on my model. I suspect this same question has already surfaced in the minds of many of other modelers out there and would appreciate any other feedback. I would like to thank you ahead of time for your assistance and cooperation very much. If you have any questions of me or would like further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me. No problem. Let me know your APO address and I'll send you a 1/72 U-Boat with my compliments. I and my family did indeed "stay safe" this Christmas, in part because of the efforts and sacrifices of forward deployed men and women such as yourself. Thanks, and God bless you! << Tim, I want to thank you for the offer, but you but Dave Judy already beat you to it. Thanks Dave!! I want each and everyone of you to know that I look forward to reading about your projects almost as much as I look forward to hearing from my wife. If anyone would like to E-mail me with questions or comments I will try to answer them as quickly as I can. I truely appreciate all of your offers and if you would like to send kits, glue or paints I will see that they are put to good use and passed to as many people as possible over here. In Christs love Roy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "David Judy" Subject Uboat for Roy Tim, I just sent a Uboat to Roy, Maybe there's another guy who would like one over there...... but he says that there are a lot of guys that build cars & trucks & armor, also they have a hard time getting glue & paints. He says that the Iraqis are facinated by these models, I was thinking maybe some "snaptite" cars & trucks for the kids. I am talking to people to join with us to do what we can do for these guys over there! They are sacrificing so much for us.......Roy"s email is knight_roy@hotmail.com Roy also says......don't believe all you hear in the media.....they are winning over there!!! In Christ, Dave Judy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject Type VIIC U-Boat You are a great benefactor to that soldier in Iraq. It is a fine and noble thing you are doing in doing to send him the German Sub kit. I am attaching some info on the German Sub that you plan to send to him. You are obviously a fine man to do this. Let us hope he stays safe and gets home safely. I am proud of you. http//www.totalnavy.com/typeviic_u.htm Regards, John Kutina ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Donsrcships@wmconnect.com Subject kind words on these postings I just read this posting That life boat sight looks very intresting and your doing a nice IT may help us later in building you have some very nice and good information on it. Hope everbody had nice xmas Don your Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Ives100@aol.com Subject Re Los Angeles Class VLS Doors The pattern used on the USS Hampton kit by Dragon was used on the "Flight 2" LA Class submarine, USS Providence, which was the first LA with the VLS tube installation. They were arranged as three outboard, three inboard (Dragon got them about 90% right, the spacing is still off). Subsequent boats (Flight 2 and Flight 3, AKA 688I [Improved]) all have the doors arranged with two outboard and four inboard on each side. Have a look at these photos http//www.navsource.org/archives/08/0877314.jpg http//www.navsource.org/archives/08/0877314.jpg Somewhere (I can't find it right now), I have a photo of the doors open. There are two noticeable differences from the Dragon Hampton doors. First, the actual doors are less oblong that the model doors, and there are spherical inner doors that seal that tubes that are integral with the outer doors. You should also do the "stern transplant", replacing the stern of the two halves with the newer stern that is missing the end fins on the stern planes. No Los Angeles class submarines had these; the preceeding Srurgeon class did. Finally, the 688I class (Of which USS Hampton is a representative) had anhedral fins back near the stern planes with countermeasure dispenesers at the tips. The propeller (use the larger one of the two provided with the kit) has a ring that is attached at the tips of the blades which you will need to fabricate. I have detailed LA Plans if you need them.
