Color code (i. e. tan for running rigging, black for standing rigging) and sizes of the various rigging on sailing ships, through-the-hull fittings for water intakes and discharges of powered vessels, pigsticks and commissioning pennants for all active duty commissioned US Navy vessels, etc. The pigstick is a small piece of rigging dedicated solely to displaying the vessel's commissioning pennant, which is to be flown at all times, with certain prescribed exceptions. The pennant itself is a long and narrow swallow-tailed flag, somewhat similar to the homeward bound pennant. For details of the history, specifications, and protocol go to these websites http//www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq106-1.htm http//www.fotw.net/flags/us^nvcp.html I found a sneaky way to make passable pennants relatively easily. The first site has a colored adornment at the top of the page. Aha! Carefully cut this adornment from a print-out, carefully fold it in half at the center star, and glue the two folds together enclosing a piece of line which will become the halyard. After the glue dries, carefully create a swallow tail and you will have a commissioning pennant complete with halyard. The pigstick can be a short spar attached to the top of the tallest mast and projecting above and slightly to the rear of the mast. It supports the block through which the halyard will pass. The pennant will look good, but won't be quite precise, for the real pennant has one red stripe over one white stripe whereas the adapted adornment has two red stripes, one above and one below a white stripe. Also, the true pennant has seven white stars whereas yours will have but six. If you drape the pennant appropriately, hey, who's to know? But if this bugs you, you can experiment by making several copies of the adornment and using the starfield as your base, preserve seven of them and attach your own two-stripe portion as you see fit. Of course you computer whiz kids can do it "right", but we who are computer illiterate have to compromise to suit our capacities. Franklyn PS If any of you computer experts can indeed make a correct pennant to 148 scale I would appreciate it if you could please send me couple of copies to affix to my WW 1 subchaser model. I say a couple, as experience has taught me to have a backup in cases like this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Tim Stoneman Subject Destroyers at Narvik/Harstad A few days ago, John Rule asked about the British 8th Destroyer Flotilla (DF) in May 1940. I'm pretty sure all of this Flotilla (comprised of the 8 'F' class ships and FAULKNOR) continued to use the three white bands they'd worn previously. As for the mysterious destroyer in company with EFFINGHAM in the photo he asked about, almost certainly taken in Harstad, I agree that it was one of the four ex-Brazilian ships which at that stage formed the 9th DF (the other two, HARVESTER and HURRICANE, weren't completed until 23 May and 21 June respectively). HAVANT was wore the dark grey hull/light grey superstructure scheme when sunk off Dunkirk on 1 June - in those desperate days I'd be surprised if she was totally repainted, so would eliminate her. The other three all wore some variant of the camouflage scheme in question at some point; I've seen photos of HESPERUS with one black band over two white, and HAVELOCK with white/black/white as in John's question - although I interpret the slightly grainy copy of the photo as being black/white/white. EFFINGHAM arrived in Ofotfjord on 20 April, and was present at Harstad until 17 May when she sailed on her last voyage, thus dating the photo to within that period. HESPERUS was in the area until 23 April; HIGHLANDER was under repair in Hull from 20 April until 19 May (and then en-route to Scapa Flow) whilst HAVELOCK was in the Narvik area and HAVANT was escorting convoys from Scapa Flow to Narvik. The ship in the photo has the non-standard fire control system on the bridge which seems only to have been fitted to HESPERUS and HAVANT - certainly the only photos I've seen of HAVELOCK's are very different, so my money's on HESPERUS - although if HAVANT (mid grey overall on completion) was repainted twice it could be her. Jeff asked about deck colours - but then referred to kits of German ships. If his query referred to the colours of Kreigsmarine ships in Weserübung, I'm less well able to answer. However, the long-out-of-print book 'Narvik' by Peter Dickens contains an overhead shot of a Maaß class and a Roeder class destroyer, captioned as alongside in Narvik, both with very dark-coloured decks (Dunkelgrau 2?) and swastikas in white disks on the decks for'd and aft. Tim Stoneman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "John Rule" Subject Help Does anyone out there have a set of instructions for the NNT model of the Vice Admiral Popov. I'm not pointing any fingers but my dear wife tidied up and it has just vanished off the face of the earth. I hope someone can help. There's not much to the instructions except for the photoetch stuff and the colour notes. Sincerely, John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From David L Miller Subject Gato colors I am modifying the Revell Lionfish kit and have opened all the drain holes in the hull and built the top of the pressure hull, and will be decking it with very thin wood or styrene. What color should I paint the under deck areas, as they will be visible on the completed model?
