A few issues ago I wrote about an RN (ex Brazilian) destroyer in dazzle near Narvik in 1940. Since then there have a couple of posts re destroyers at Narvik. I am attaching a couple of magnified scans from two photos I got from the IWM. The quality is a bit grainy, but I am sure the photos are of the same boat. They were taken at Harstad. The destroyer is almost definitely one of the ex Braziliian ones with no Y gun. I have attached the scans for Shane to post on the SMML site please. Comments please. Sincerely John Rule The photos have been uploaded to the SMML under Misc References. Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Roy Knight" Subject Hello from Iraq Hello everyone; I hope that you all had a great holiday season. I thank each and everyone of you that has written and sent packages to us over here. Dave, Bob, Doug, Mike, Tom, and the list could go on for days. Your kindness has shown that we are over here for all of the right reasons. I am hoping that someone here can help me, I have some of the guys over here that are wanting to build some of the 1/72 Revel U-boats, and I need to find a way to get about 3 more of them. We are willing to pay for the kits and have them shipped, we have no model catalogs or magazines here so we have no way to contact anyone about them. Any help that you can give would be appreciated. Thanks again to everyone who has who has prayed, written, or sent anything over here. Your faith in us and your kindness humbles us. In Christs love Roy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Howard Brower Subject Re KGV questions You are not being a pain in the ... That is what this forum is for, There are many knowledgeable people on this list and all of them are glad to help fellow shipmodelers. As far as your questions go well I am as much in the dark as you on the KGV, but I'm sure you will get many good answers. So ask away and remember we all are glad to help each other Howard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From " Kjetil Lindahl" Subject Re kgv questions Ok I give it a try, correct me if wrong. >> 1.I have not found any photos of her at Scapa in the summer of 1944. Where I can I find some? << Sorry, never seeen any. >> 2. Tarrant's book (page 234) has a photo of her at Alexandria, on the way to the Pacific, and she was painted overall light grey (no B20 dark panel)?. << You can see the hull panel on the photo, It is clearly darker. >> Is this the scheme that she would have worn at Scapa? I can't help thinking/wishing that she might have been in a disruptive scheme?. << No disruptive after refit for KGV as far as I know , but Howe had the disruptive after the refit for some time. >> 3. It is clear to me that the rear starboard anchor should be omitted, but can anyone tell me why and when it was removed? Which anchor is the most likly one to have been used at Scapa?. << Probably removed to save weight. The ships was very wet forward. >> 4. The photos, etc that I have found suggest that there were a large number of carley floats around the superstructures, but the kit has only one stack of three. Where can I buy extra ones, or even, how could I try to make some? << Not sure , probably possible to cast from resin. >> 5. How authoritive are the plans in the recent Chesneau book? I am particularly interested in the 20mm guns without tubs. What are the hatched rectangles close to the 5.25" guns? << I think the plans and the 20mm gun configuration is good. Never seen the oerlikons beside b-turret on photos taken after the refit,(removed or relocated, or just hard to see?) but i have seen them on photos before refit with no tubs. Not sure what the rectangular boxes on superstructure is. If you look at the Australian War Memorial website, at www.awm.gov.au and search the collections database for HMS King George V and her sisters you get some very nice closeup photos of the ships in Australian waters in 1945. On a couple of them you can see the 20 mm guns on the quarterdeck and behind the breakwater. Looks like the ones behind the breakwater had open rails round them and ammunition boxes on the outside of the rail. The ones without tubs on quarterdeck seem to have no rails. Kjetil ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Joel Labow Subject Re What's "Lt (SC) SS"? Hi Allan, 'LT' is Lieutenant and 'SC' is Supply Corps. A Supply Corps lieutenant would abbreviate his (or her) rank in official correspondence as 'LT, SC, USN (or USNR). Officers don't normally include warfare qualifications in correspondence , however enlisted personnel do...a Chief Torpedoman who was qualified in submarines would sign himself as 'TMC, USN (SS)'. Other commonly seen warfare quals are (SW) for surface warfare and (AW) for qualified aircrew. I'm sure your friend was indicating that he was submarine qualified but the ship's office wouldn't let a letter leave the ship signed 'LT (SC) SS'! HTH, Joel Labow CAPT, MC, USN (ret) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Chris and Kayo Amano-Langtree" Subject Re KGV questions Hi Michael 1. Have you tried the photo archive at the Imperial War Museum yet? They have an enormous amount of photos of KGV at most stages in her career and this would be a good place to start. 2 and 3 if you can find the photos then you will be able to answer these questions. The anchor was removed fairly early in her career. 4. I believe White Ensign do extra Carley floats - I modelled the Tamiya 1/700 KGV in the Pacific and you need a lot. 5. Numerous photos show these 20 mm guns and the plans in Raven and Roberts also detail them. Christopher Amano-Langtree ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "John Snyder" Subject Re "Lt (SC) SS"? Well, unless things have changed a lot since I served in the Navy, that would be a Lieutenant in the Supply Corps, who is qualified in submarines.
