Polyohemus was one of the first ships to be painted grey for "stealth" but the new quick firing guns ended her service. She was for the 1870s not the 1880s See "Sail & Steam Navy List 1815-1889" page 303, "Warrior to Dreadnought" page 85 & "Birth of the Battleship" page 150 some good photographs of her. Hope that heps some. Gary Mansfield ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Tim Perry" Subject Re Plastic - not again! but--- Gene, I think you might need to qalify the 'longevity' requirement before specifying suitable materials and adhesives, as well as give some indication of storage conditions. Some materials stand up well to changes of humidity, for example, while others may not change shape or strength, but will loose their colour if exposed to daylight. Ultimately, all materials (unless you use something like gold!!) will degrade eventually. Wood is great, but I have yet to hear of any insects that will eat fibreglass. Some tin alloys turn to powder in low temperatures, and early Barbie dolls are very rare because the plastic (vinyl?) used in their construction degrades to a brown liquid, over decades. How many Airfix AFV models lost their wheels due to a reaction between the polystyrene parts and the vinyl tracks? Most of mine, certainly. Those US Navy Museum notes are based on good, long term observations, but of course cannot cover more recent materials. We simply do not know how long some of them will last. Who would have thought CDs were susceptible to a fungus, for example? I'm just off to back up my hard disk. Again.... Can anyone recommend hobby shop(s) or bookstores (especially rare and used) which might relieve my suffering in a nautical way? Thanks to all, Rupe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "david harris" Subject 1/72nd scale U Boat flag I haven't found anyone who offers the complete version of the flag, but will be trying this workaround for the Revell flag in the box when I finally get around to making my U Boat kit. Being a wingy thingy modeller also, I suffer from the missing swastika problem a lot, and to get around it, have bought a decal sheet of assorted 1/72nd scale swastkas. Some of these are quite small and should be a suitable size for adding to the middle of the flag. I haven't got around to trying it yet, so can't comment about how well it works, but seem to remember getting OK results in the past by sticking one decal on top of another. I got the decal sheet online from http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=X03672 All the best. David.
