I will pass the info along. Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Tony Mattson" Subject Re HMS "Polyphemus" >> Chris Tilley hopes that someone will do a full hull model of "Polyphemus" sometime. It has been done. In "Model Shipwright" Quarterly No. 70, Dec. 1989, John Hollis has a article on a 1/60 scale "P". The article also reviews the original ship, and mentions one of its chief protagonists, the magnificently named ADM Sartorius. It also describes a feature of the ship that does not appear elsewhere, as far as I know the keel had 250 tons of ballast that could be released in case of hull damage. Really, with all this shape-changing, the ship would have been better named "Polymorph". Hollis' model would be about 4 ft long. It was a floating (operating) model. The article describes constructional details and techniques. The hull was molded in glass fiber. Upperworks and details were made in styrene ("plasticard") with some wood, although the decks were planked in a material called "Solaboard". The material was not further defined, an irritating habit of many magazines which have a circulation outside their native country. Five of the ten photos are of the completed model and show a high standard of finish and a most realistic appearance. Somewhere or other I have seen a photo of a model of "P" which I believe was a static one, and probably a smaller scale than Hollis'. It also appeared to be well done. For the life of me, I cannot find any reference to it. << Apologies if I am retracing old ground - I haven't followed this thread up 'til now, but for what it's worth... ... I believe that Dean's Marine in the UK has a mould of the Hollis hull, also constructed by Mr Hollis. The 160 scale GRP hulls that they produce from the mould are fully plated with a rounded underwater section and incorporate the trunk deck. According to Ron Dean's website the hulls retail for 64 pounds stg. No doubt postage and pkg is extra. There's also a waterline model of Polyphemus on display in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich unless, of course, the barbarians the NMM employs as curators have 'dispersed' of it like so many of the other exhibits that they've thrown away in the name of 'reform in action' - but that's another subject completely! Tony Mattson Akl, NZ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "bob evans" Subject Jose Regidor I am hoping that someone out there might be an old salt and be able to help me with this one. I wish to make a small waterline model of a vessel “Jose Regidor” for a colleagues retirement present. The vessel was built in 1947 as the “Koromiko” for the Union Steamship company of New Zealand and later sold to John Manners and Co , being renamed “Jose Regidor”. I would be grateful for any leads to this vessel, or failing that the ship “Thames Breeze” which was also operated by John Manners. Bob Evans ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Paul Silverstone Subject Naval Tour to Great Britain, 19-30 June 2005 During June 2005, Great Britain is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. I.N.R.O. is proposing a tour to Britain that will include being present at the International Fleet Review on June 29th at Spithead. The itinerary will include visits to maritime and naval museums and ships located in various ports, Hartlepool, Liverpool, Bristol, London and Portsmouth. Warships to be visited include the cruiser Belfast, submarine Onyx, frigate Plymouth, sailing frigate Trincomalee, the first ironclad the Warrior, and Nelson's flagship Victory, as well as the famous ships Great Britain and Cutty Sark. We will stay in three-star hotels or better with breakfast and some dinners included. The group will travel in England by motor-coach with a driver-guide. Also we expect that INRO members in England will join us in various locations. We also hope to be "on the water" during the Fleet Review. We have arranged air transportation by British Airways from New York to Manchester on June 19th and returning from London on June 30th. There will be an extension package for those who wish to remain longer in London. We hope you will want to come on this tour. Accommodation is limited, particularly in Portsmouth. We have tried to keep the cost to a minimum, but prices in England are high aggravated by the weakness of the US dollar. We regret that we are unable to accept payment by credit card. Price per person (sharing twin) $2,779, Single supplement $479 This price includes the itinerary attached plus round trip air fare from New York JFK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
