There is a Rootsweb message board that specialises in maritime immigration with many helpful experts (including Canadian immigration) and I thoroughly recommend it. See http//www.theshipslist.com/archive.htm The CANBERRA was a 7,710 gross ton ship, 426.5ft x 57.2ft, one funnel, two masts, twin screw, speed 15 knots, accommodation for 64-1st and 646-tourist class passengers. Launched on 9th Nov.1912 by A. Stephen & Son, Glasgow for Australian Steamships Proprietary Ltd. Between 1917-1919 she served as a troopship under British India S.N.Co management and in 1925 was badly damaged by fire at Sydney. In 1948 she was towed from Sydney to Singapore, sold to Cia.Maritima del Este, converted from coal to oil burning and registered under the Panamanian flag. July 1950 first voyage Piraeus - Quebec - Montreal (1 voyage). 25th Jul.1950 first voyage Montreal - Quebec - Cherbourg - Southampton (3 round voyages). 7th Oct.1950 resumed Montreal - Quebec - Piraeus - Quebec - Montreal (1 round voyage). 5th Jun.1951 first voyage Montreal - Quebec - Cherbourg - Southampton - Bremen. 8th Oct.1954 last voyage Quebec - Cherbourg - Southampton - Bremen. In Dec.1954 she was sold to the Dominican Republic and renamed ESPANA. 1960 Scrapped in the Dominican Republic. [North Atlantic Seaway vol.4 by N.R.P.Bonsor] Note from Mike Potter Jordan's Merchant Fleets 1939 lists this ship as propelled by two shafts driven by VTE engines. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Michael Jurijew" Subject Fujimi Kongo Enrico See the attached link. It is a detailed build-up of the Hasegawa Kongo, but most of the upgrades should be readily applicable to the Fujimi kit as well. It's in Japanese, but you should be able to find the word "Kongo" in English, and the pictures speak for themselves. Best of Luck! http//homepage2.nifty.com/vanguard/intro/main4.htm Mike in Edmonton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Paul Giltz" Subject "Older" Canberra If the Canberra of 1912 was built in Glasgow Scotland it is very probable that Glasgow University has information on it. A few months ago I discovered that the archives at Glasgow University hold a monstrous amount of information about the shipbuilding industry in Scotland. They have builders plans, photographs from the builders yards of ships on trials, the very best of stuff for model builders. If Canberra was built by A.Stephens & Sons then you really are in luck. A short time ago someone asked on the list about the ship ' Jose Rogidor'. That ship was also built by A.Stephens & Sons. I made a request to the duty archivist at Glasgow University, they came up with five photos and 26 drawings that were available. Good hunting. Pual Giltz Toledo, Ohio ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From beyondsun@mindspring.com Subject Re Fujimi Kongo Enrico, I recently submitted a review of the Fumimi 1/450 Kirishima kit - which I'm sure is very similar if not identical to their Kongo - to "Rajendra's Ship Model Kit List" http//www.quuxuum.org/rajens_list/shiprevs.html My review is not yet posted; the List is scheduled for update, with all the new material, in March. However I can e-mail you my review as an attachment - and maybe include a picture or two as well. Just e-mail me (above) and let me know, buddy. Cheers, Matty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Chris and Kayo Amano-Langtree" Subject Re Piorun Again Hi Tom >> I have been ill and reading a lot and her original name was quoted as "Nerissa" by one source. << The original name for Piorun was indeed Nerissa but when she was loaned to the Poles they felt that this was too girly so they petitioned the Royal Navy to change it. The Royal Navy at this time allowed this to go ahead. When Piroun was returned to the Royal Navy in 1946 the name Nerissa had already been reallocated to a minesweeper so she was renamed Noble (the original name for Van Galen) and finished her career under this name.
