Christopher Amano Langtree was kind enough to provide more info on the naming of this ship. The name Noble was definitely mentioned in a much earlier post from another member. Forgive my ignorance, but what was the “Van Gahlen”? Kind Regards, Tom Saundry Vancouver, BC CANADA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "bob evans" Subject Re "Older Canberra" I agree with Paul Giltz's comments as he was instrumental in suggesting Glasgow University to me in my search for "Jose Regidor" They have been exceptionally helpful and hopefully plans and photo's of this vessel are now on their way to me. Thanks again to Paul and good luck with "Canberra" Rgds Bob Evans ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Ives100@aol.com Subject Re USS Jimmy Carter commissioning All, I just returned from the commissioning ceremony of the USS Jimmy Carter at the New London Submarine Base in Groton, CT. Very impressive ceremony put on by the US Navy. I was also very happy to be accompanied by John Sheridan, Yankee ModelWorks. The Carter is the last of the Seawolf class, and is 100 feet longer than the Seawolf. She has a special "multi-mission" module installed abaft her sail area, which can deploy ROVs and perform other "special operations" missions. President Carter was in attendance and spoke, and Mrs. Carter gave the order to "bring the ship to life". Also in attendance was Mrs. Elinor Rickover, wife of the late admiral. Much to our delight, John & I had an opportunity to take many high resolution pictures of the Carter, as well as some great shots of the the other "special operations" nuclear submarine that was docked next to the Carter, the NR-1. This is the small nuclear submarine that can dive to 3000 feet, and roll along the ocean bottom on concrete filled truck tires. I will send some of the pictures to Shane to post on the SMML website. I will also scan a few photos from the glossy color book (64 pages) that was handed out, which has some heretofore unpublished photos of the Carter undergoing assembly at EB. All and all, a great day. Lombard" Subject Piorun and U class (Sokol/Dzik) deck gun There are a couple of pix of ORP Piorun in "Poland's Navy 1918-1945" Michael Alfred Peske, 1999, Hippocrene, NY, ISBN 0-7818-0672-0. Also, I'm looking for a relatively clear picture of the (3", 10 pdr, 76mm) deck gun of the British U-class, or, more specifically ORP Sokol (ex HMS Urchin) or ORP Dzik. Dzik was later the Danish U1, "Springeren" I'm working on the Mirage kit, and don't quite grok the PE for the deck gun, especially w.r.t. a couple of shots that I do have, e.g., from the above book and the web. BTW, the Mirage kit appears to be the AGA kit plus resin, PE, decals, and new instructions, which make quite a nice improvement -) David N. What I would like to know before I make a purchase of these much needed items are they larger or smaller than the raft canisters found on Skywave's E-1 weapons set (which were underscale). Any help will be greatly appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "dengar" Subject Seaphoto CD Z-39 & T-35 Has anyone seen the Seaphoto CD of the German Destroyer and Torpedo Boat (Z-39 & T-35 ) Interested in finding out about the quality and if it's useful in building 1/100 scale models. Cheers Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Joy and Nick Rogers" Subject Nicholas Lambert's 1998 Article on Exploding RN Battlecruisers at Jutland Greetings from Godzone, In a discussion about The Battle of Jutland,on the Steel Navy's Messageboard. http//members.boardhost.com/Warship/index.html This webpage for this Abstract was posted by Roger Todd. http//www.smh-hq.org/jmh/volumes/jmh621/abs621.html Nicholas A. Lambert, "'Our Bloody Ships' or `Our Bloody System'? Jutland and the Loss of the Battle Cruisers, 1916,'' Journal of Military History 62/1 29-55. (January 1998) This article examines the circumstances surrounding the loss of the three British battle cruisers at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. The main arguments are built upon evidence that officers and seamen manning the guns inside the turrets encouraged cordite safety regulations to be ignored, to the extent of leaving the ship vulnerable to catastrophic explosion in the event of turrets being hit by enemy shells. Safety was ignored, it is shown, to reduce congestion in the main magazines and to meet pressure from the squadron commander (Admiral David Beatty) and his staff to shoot as quickly as possible--even at the expense of gunnery accuracy. Lambert demonstrates that investigations in 1916 convinced the Board of Admiralty that this was the main reason for the loss of the battle cruisers. But a change in administration several months later, and the promotion of several former fleet officers to posts inside the Admiralty, notably Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, who had commanded the fleet at Jutland, resulted in further investigations being abandoned and the evidence already collected being shelved. Sounds like a goody.I have read that HMS Lion survived Jutland largely due to the efforts of a newly arrived CPO Gunner Alexander Grant. See the following excerpt from his memoirs. http//www.worldwar1.co.uk/grant.htm Grant tightened up Lion's cordite handling procedures and got rid of all her "past it use by date" cordite just before Jutland. Question- Where might I get a copy of this article? Be warned, I live in Auckland,New Zealand.
