Can the ALABAMA kit be far behind? << They're the same kit in a different box. The kit more closely resembles the Kearsarge, but it is really neither ship. James Corley AAA Hobby Supply www.aaahobby.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From robert dibbon Subject flower class guns >> 1. Is there an accurate set of after-market guns available to replace those supplied in the 1/72-scale Flower-class Corvette? Or good photos of them (the book Canada's Flowers has a good photo of the secondary gun). Or a article that suggests how to detail the kit items? 2. I believe that the secondary gun at the waist of the Flowers was a single-barreled pom-pom. Is it a crime to replace it with a Bofors 40mm cannon (the Airfix 1/76(?)-scale one is a lot more detailed than the kit-supplied item)? 3. Does anyone have info about the pom-pom. I believe that it was available to the RN in 1-, 4- and 8-barreled versions, and possibly that it was a 40mm-caliber weapon. If so, did it use the same ammo as the Bofors gun. Was the US Navy's 4-barreled AA weapon a 4-barreled pom-pom, a 4-barreled Bofors gun, or something entirely diffrent? They seemed to be loaded with 4-round clips similar to the British Bofors gun. << hi george go to the djparkins site out of england.click on great little ships.all you seek ye shall find.seriously,i`ve got almost all his sets for my project and couldn`t ask for better service or product.give him a try. robert dibbon halifax nova scotia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Bill Bryant Subject Flower Class Corvette Guns George, For excellent drawings of the guns on Flowers, you need a copy of /Warship Perspective Flower Class Corvettes /by John Lambert, published by WR Press. The gun mounted in the bandstand on the engine room casing was a single barrel pom pom. Very early in the war, twin mount Lewis MGs were the other RN light AA guns [twin mount 50 cal. water cooled Browning MGs on RCN corvettes]. A few RN corvettes also had Vickers MGs in quad mounts. Later in the war, the MGs generally were replaced by single 20 mm Oerlikons w/ guns on each of the bridge wings. Some corvettes had additional single 20 mm guns mounted on either side of the aft superstucture in bandstands or on platforms. To the best of my knowledge, 40 mm Bofors guns weren't mounted on RN/RCN covettes. The most accurate models of corvette guns are from Great Little Ships in the UK available thru Loyalhanna Dockyards here in the US; don't know if available in Oz, but I think you can also buy direct from Great Little Ships. Be warned though, this stuff is very expensive. You therefore might also look at the Floating Drydock site. He carries lots of 172 scale detailed parts for USN. Might be a cheaper source for 20 mm guns, but won't have the RN/RCN pom pom. You can get white metal castings of Lewis guns & Vickers guns made by Aeroclub, available thru Roll Models in the US, but I think that scratch building the very complicated Vickers quad mount would be a tough chore. I think Aeroclub may also make a white metal 20 mm single mount. HTH, Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Erwin Van Deynze Subject George battling it out with the Flower Class guns Hi George! You'll probably get plenty of answers to this one, but I might chime in... 1. GLS (Great Little Ships) has a complete range of update sets for the Flower. Amongst them those for the guns. I have the gun sets and they are really worth their money. Seems almost a shame putting them on the model instead of displaying them by themself! Point your browser to http//www.djparkins.clara.net/gls/glsmast.htm to find them. 2. A crime? No it's BLASPHEMY!!!!!! No kiddin' if it would please yourself, go ahead... after all, it's your model and if you're having fun... It won't be accurate I guess, for one thing, the Airfix bofors isn't the same as the ship-based guns... 3. It's Calibre is about 40mm, but it was different ammo. I believe the Pom-pom ammo is much shorter. Also the pom-poms didn't use those 4-round clips, but large rectangular magazines. After all, the pom-pom was know for it's capacity of pumping huge amounts of ammo in the air, so having a large magazine capacity helps... As reference goes, the Anatomy of the ship HMCS Agassiz gives plenty of drawing. I have also some plans by our regular SMMLie John Lambert of the weapons. They are old, but he probably still sells them. To find his plans got to http//www.john-lambert-plans.com/ HTH Erwin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Brooks Rowlett Subject Maryland Silver Company--Ship Plans Can anyone offer comments and reviews? Begin forwarded message >> Is anyone familiar with the work of this company, owned by Duane Borchers? Despite the name, his specialty is naval book reprints and blueprints (and he is in West Virginia, not Maryland), especially but not exclusively from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Apparently all of his material is for USN ships. I am tempted by some of their books of blueprints--but they are expensive and I really don't know what the quality of the plans is. These are listed under the "books" links on the website below. _http//www.marylandsilver.com/Default.htm_ (http//www.marylandsilver.com/Default.htm) He does provide a list of the specific blueprints in each book. Some of these books look rather fragmentary; on the other hand, some of the books look to have rather complete sets of plans for classes for which the Archives has no original paper plans, only microfilms--like the Essexes (although there is a full set of deck plans for them in John Roberts' Anatomy book on Intrepid), Baltimores, Brooklyns, and Clevelands (he has not done the Fletchers, which are also tragically missing from the Archives). Borchers also offers other sets of plans, not in book form, at more reasonable prices. Most of these are of U.S. warships of c. 1890--1920. Has any of you seen this guy's stuff? In any case, whether you can help with my query or not, it is worth taking a look at this site, especially if you are interested in U.S. warships of the Spanish-American War and World War I era. << Thanks! Just guessing but maybe around 1/220 scale? Or is it another colour which the USN or RN used it for ? I'm planning to airbrush it this weekend.
