This had a cable with a rotator at the end in the water which, as its name suggests, rotates the cable when the ship was under way. The other end was connected to an instrument at the stern which recorded the number of revolutions thus giving the distance travelled. Queen Mary and clearly visible is the degaussing cable attached to the starboard side running along the length of the ship from above starboard anchor.
