I need this information for IJN Nachi in 1943 (Battle of Komandorski Island) IJN Mikuma in 1942 (Battle of Midway) IJN Aoba in 1944 (after her last refit, before she was again severly damaged) IJN Oyodo in 1944 (Operation Sho-Go, Battle of Leyte) Best regards Lars ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From HGYL@aol.com Subject Re Ships' Logs, Trailing Cable and Otherwise Brian Taylor's comments re the 1908 Manual of seamanship are very interesting. I had not thought to look in my own copy of an earlier Manual. Mine is the 1908 edition, reprinted in 1928 with revisions made in 1915 and 1928. The logs described are the Trident electric and non electric, Neptune, Cherub and Forbes. No mention of the hand line or piece of wood method, interesting that they reappeared in a later edition of the Manual. There is a note stating that "The only logs now supplied to ships are the Trident electric and non electric". It further states that while the other types were still in use afloat they would not be reissued when returned to stores. Engine revolutions were indeed used to calibrate speed through the water (but to get speed over the ground one needed to know what currents were either helping or hindering and make a stab at guessing the impact of growth on the hull). We had to report total number of revolutions turned during the watch to the bridge at the end of each watch. This was easily taken from the revolution counter. I never served on a turbine driven ship so presume that it was propeller revolutions which were counted. On reciprocating steam and non- geared diesel engined ships, engine rpm was obviously the same as propeller rpm. On a recent voyage on the RMS "St. Helena" to the island of St.Helena, I was interested to learn that the GPS system was relied upon totally for all navigation. There was, however, a speed indicator which I was told was of the venturi tube type transmitting to an "electronic box" which had readouts strategically placed on the bridge. A recent instruction from either the Captain or Head Office had the deck officers re-learning their skills with the sextant. If any SMML readers are not familiar with the Admiralty Manuals of Seamanship they are well worthwhile seeking out from used booksellers. They are an absolute mine of information and are profusely illustrated. Regards to all, Harold Lincoln ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Robert Mosher" Subject Zeppelins by Sea I was just tipped off by the Lighter than Air Society newsletter about these pictures at www.dockwize.nl/ that show the Zeppelin NT rigid air ship being delivered by sea to Japan (after the Russians refused it overflight clearance). The url is for the home page and you will see a thumbnail version of the airship being transported - click on the side caption to get the enlarged photos. Great pictures - and there's a diorama that would be hard to beat! Robert A. Mosher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Re Taffrail or Patent logs, et al Re Taffrail, Patent, and other vessel speed devices And, laddies, dinna ye forget that all of them measure the vessel's speed through the water. If the ambient water is moving, (tide, current, etc.), or if a considerable wind is blowing, or both, the navigator must include those conditions in his calculations. I sure do like photo-etch ...-} Should be finished with the display model sometime next week. Am building in subassemblies and resisting the urge to glue them in place until they're completed. Al Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Joel Labow Subject Minor Quality Assurance Problem With the Re-Release of the Revell Kearsarge Colleagues, At last my Kearsarge arrived! Many questions were instantly laid to rest...yes it is the original Kearsarge and not a re-boxed Alabama. The box is larger than the 1961 version but the contents are identical save that the coppering isn't prepainted. The detail is sharp...so much for the theory that "the mold was broke!" As I blissfully contemplated the kits parts nested in their individual compartments with teutonic precision, alas, a crumpled petal crept into my bed of roses...it finally dawned on me that the reason the hull halves fit so neatly into the box was that fact that there were two left halves! I'm sure that Revell will get on top of this minor problem but so far it's Early Bird 0 Worm 1! You may want to wait a bit before placing your order! Joel Labow ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Brett Soden" Subject USS Monitor & CSS Virginia, I'm seeking painting & construction hints Hi all, I have just purchased Verlinden's 1200 scale waterline USS monitor and I have the CSS Virginia on hold at my local hobby shop. And I was wondering if any one out there can offer me some advise on putting these two kits together. In particular, I'm seeking information on how I should go about paining them, as I intend to put the two together in a diorama. So I would like to make them as accurate as possible. So any assistance that anyone is willing to provide me will be greatly appreciated. Brett... Townsville, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From andrew jones Subject US to sink "America" Hi Not sure if this is old news, but just came across some news about plans for the US navy to pound the "heck" out of the old USS America to see what a carrier can stand up, especially after the attack on the USS Cole. They intend on pounding the ship for a while to see how a warship stands up to constant attacks & to simulate various threats from torpedoes, to cruise missiles to small sucide boats. The tests will be so secret, that ex crew members & general military commanders will not be able to view the experiment. regards Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Rusty White Subject 1/350 Ticonderoga/Spruance/Kidd Class Super Sets are here!
