Custom Built US Navy Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise Item number 6520154898 << There was an article in FSM about this model a few years ago, wasn't there? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Allen Stevens" Subject HMAS Australia - Help with the Combrig kit! As always with Combrig kits the detail and quality is superb - but ! The box art shows a photo which is dated 1928, having looked through my large (over large according to my wife) book collection I have come to the conclusion that the kit is actually of HMAS Australia in the early war years. As built in 1928 Australia had a raised platform deck midships on which sits the third funnel, under this the torpedo tubes were mounted. The Combrig kit has no such deck, all of the WWII photos I have show this deck missing could someone in SMMLie land confirm my reasoning (maybe paranoia creeping in here) ? I have found some good photos on the web (although not close enough, always the way) but does anyone know of any plans or drawings available on the web or does anyone have any scans they can email me. Regards to all worldwide A very hopeful Allen from the sunny? UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Gordy Larson" Subject Plans transfer to wood Does somebody have a good way to transfer model plans to sheet balsa other than using carbon paper and tracing the images?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Mike Petersen" Subject Re Custom Built US Navy Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise One of the best representations of the Enterprise I've seen. Right up there with the Smithsonian version. I was onboard the E back in 89 and it doesn't look like he missed anything. But... lol. If I had to nitpick one thing, his padeyes, albeit amazing considering he made them each by hand, don't appear to alternate. It should jog. Each line should be offset from the next if you lined them up across from bow to stern. That is all I can see wrong with it though. $250,000? Yikes. How much for shipping and insurance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Mason, Jeff" Subject Lost photo of HMS Hood Just been studying a photo “Seconds later she was gone” Lost photo of the last moments of the Mighty Hood. This is from HMS Hood web sight. & shows the Flag ship almost obscured by shell bursts.but no visible fire on the Boat deck. My question is from where was this photo taken. The angle suggests from the Port side slightly astern. The Prince of Wales was astern 40 deg to starboard of the Hood at a distance of 800 yards with forward guns trained 40 deg to starboard, prior to the port 20 order to bring the aft guns to bear, unless everything I have ever read is wrong. The nearest other British ships where shadowing the German task force & the British destroyer escort to Hollands squadron where 2 hours away. If the POW was in this position she would have had to fire over the Hood. I first thought the photograph had been developed in reverse but still the angle should be much finer with less of the length of the ship showing. Indeed on the loss of his Flagship Cpn Leach had to haul out of line to avoid running into the wreckage. Can any of you Nautical types explain this to a land lubber? Jeff Mason ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Henry Blecha Subject Monstrous WWII Japanese Sub Wreck Found Near Hawaii http//www.nbc4.tv/irresistible/4301993/detail.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Paul Giltz" Subject Dutch battleship designs-Roger Torgeson Roger, I lost some of my E-mail addresses during a power failure. I got the information on the proposed Dutch capital ships, thanks. Paul ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Reynold.Oh@defence.gov.au Subject Ice Cream Barges Hi SMML, 1. George Oh from Sydney, Australia here. I came across this item in http//www.members.iinet.net.au/~gduncan/1941.html In 1945, the US Navy had commissioned 2 x 1-million dollar ICE CREAM BARGES. They (no names, numbers or designations) produced ice cream (only) for US sailors (and a very few, lucky, invited others, I expect) in the Pacific region. Their output was 1,500 gallons per hour. They were concrete-hulled and, not having an intergral engine, they had to be towed by a tug or other ship. One, was off Naha (where?) and was commanded by MAJOR (hardly a US Navy rank) Charles Zeigler. 2. Is this fair dinkum? Or is equivalent to an urban myth? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "David Zimmerman" Subject USS North Carolina --colors Dear SMML's What are the dates of each of the paint schemes on the USS North Carolina from the date of her commissioning or where would I need to look to find this information? Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From GUSDOCVILL@aol.com Subject Opinions Need six (6) Farragut Destroyers. Have been waiting for someone to make a "good" kit of the Farragut. Found Kobo Hiryu has what I need. Anyone ever build them? Are they worth the money? Do they require extensive "work"? Grace and peace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, bless you and your beloved family forever.
