I also seem to recall an old magazine article by Ray Bean - probably from Plastic Ship Modeler - in which he converted this kit into HMCS Bonaventure. I am very interested in your idea; want to do the same for the RN heavy carriers, in 1/600 scale. eMail me if you want to "grok" on it, buddy! Glad to hear you're "out from under" and back on-line, Bob. Cheers, Matty on Sanibel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "bert" Subject Re British Light Fleet Carriers Heller made a 1/400 kit of the Arromanche years ago, Arromanche was originally the "Collosus". The hull was virtually the same for both Collosus and Majestic classes Yours Aye (TaT). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Kelvin Mok Subject ULCC Tankers >> You would however be up against a few significant logistical and financial problems. You would need a suitable dry-dock, all classification societies require docking every five years. You would need suitable deep water berthing or mooring facilities at each end of it's run. You would need to consider draught restrictions on it's intended route, and cost in dredging or diversions. You would have to find a P&I Club willing to take the risks. You then have to calculate whether the economies of scale outweigh the costs and investment involved. As no one to my knowledge has done this yet, I suspect that they don't. << This is exactly the argument that is most convincing. I recall that some twenty years ago there were actually one or two 1-million ton tankers with the name series "Universe something." A check on the Guiness Bokk of Records of that era should provide confirmation. I think there were later news articles why there wouldn't be any more of them and the 800,000 ton limit was what stuck in my mind. Tankers are not exactly glamor subjects and those news stories were shuffled to the dark recesses of my mind until the TV show on "Extreme Machines." Then one gets to ask question one never thought of asking before. Thanks also for your heads up on giant container ships. These are pretty impressive and its nice to view one in context as like when I was driving by Oakland a couple of months ago. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From GORDONBUT@aol.com Subject Re British Light Fleet Carriers There is a kit of a Collosus Class carrier by Heller in 1/400 scale. I saw it in Germany last week and was priced at 39 euros. Hope this helps Gordon Buttress SWA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Daniel Taylor" Subject S-100 Schnellboot A rather late response to the following message From Brinksfred@aol.com >> i am reseaching the s100 schnellboot and after getting all the readily available information there are still two major gabs namely cockpit and wheelhouse detail and the ring mount on the forward 20mm. any help would be appreciated. << I have found the following references very useful S-Boote, German E-boats in action 1939-1945 by Jean-Philippe Dallies-Labourdette Pub Histoire & Collectios ISBN 2-913903-49-5 Kriegsmarine Schnellboote (Warship Pictorial No 15) by Steve Wiper Pub Classic Warship Publishing ISBN 0-9710687-4-7 Schnellboot in action (Warships No 18) by T Garth Connelly and David Krakow Pub Squadron/Signal Publications ISBN 0-89747-457-0 Each are useful in their own way although I should say that the first publication has some very suspect illustrations and poorly proofread text. The number and quality of photographs more than make up for these complaints. These should help with the wheelhouse but the forward gun tub remains enigmatic. The kit provides a pivot in the middle of the mount which is clearly wrong. the actual arrangement is a ring mounting that should be able to swing most of the mounting down to leave only a small portion of the gun barrel standing upright. Another must see is Dave Krakow's website at www.prinzeugen.com he has begun a description of the build which covers a number of important points. I hope that the build continues soon. There are also some completed model pictures on my own website - www.d-taylor.dircon.co.uk Someone needs to do a set of mines for the S-boot as well. If only I had more time.
