HMCS CRESCENT (ex HMS) was converted in the early 50's along with a "V" class HMCS ALGONQUIN (ex HMS VALENTINE) and became very close sisters. ALGONQUIN was on the gun line at Normandy. Served in both in mid 60's, and was aboard ALGONQUIN when it was transferred to Esquimalt on Canada"s west coast. Both ships served into the early 70's as training ships for officer cadets. Much of the work on these two ships was used in the design of the new "St Laurent" class of the mid 50's. Tom Dean Hamilton, Ontario ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Tim Stoneman Subject Re Frigate Bridge Conversions According to Anthony Preston, Warship Profile No.32 'HMS Cavalier and CA Class destroyers' (London, 1973), modernisations, including frigate bridge, new fire control and sensors, Squid Mortars, loss of 'X' 4.5" gun and the after torpedo tubes, were as follows Caprice Yarrow's (Clyde) Sep 56 - early 59 Caesar Rosyth Nov 57 - late 60 Cambrian Devonport Mar 58 - Jan 63 Cassandra Location not stated, 57 - 59 Tim Stoneman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Axel Wolters" Subject New Aoshima "Bismarck" kit Hello all, thanks to all, for your information concerning the new Aoshima "Bismarck" and "Tirpitz" kits, especially to Mitsuaki Kubota. Now I have the choice between Aoshima, Dragon and Trumpeter... Modellers greetings from Germany Axel Wolters ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From BGMarshall@aol.com Subject 94 foot US Air Force Rescue boats Greetings everyone! I am gathering information on the two 94 foot rescue boats built of wood by the US Navy for the US Air Force in the early 1950s. One boat, 1251, was built in Detroit, Michigan USA. The other boat, 1252, was built in Stockton, California USA not too long afterwards. Apparently, the boats were evaluated by the Air Force for a period of time and turned back to the Navy, who eventually got rid of them. I have found a limited amount of information including early conceptual drawings, pictures and administrative information at the US National Archives, the Detroit Historical Society, the Mariner's Museum in Newport News, Virginia USA and the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California USA. A military boat enthusiast friend got me pictures of the 1251 after she had been sold off and renamed the New Buccaneer. And members of the Air Force Crash Boat Association have been most helpful. My next step is the US Naval Historical Center in Washington, DC and possibly the Air University at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Alabama. Oh, and some of the information in Norman Friedman's book US Small Combatants is wrong. But then he probably got bad information. Do any of our SMMLers know of any additional sources I might possibly mine for information? Every little bit helps. Thanks, Chip Marshall; Silver Spring, Maryland USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Mike Potter Subject Re Frigate Bridge Conversions From Leo Marriott, _RN Destroyers since 1945_, pp 58 - 59 "HMS _Carron_ was taken out of reserve in 1953 for a modernization at Chatham Dockyard which was to take over two years. _Cavendish_ followed in January 1954, and the rest of the class followed over the next few years with _Caesar_ and _Cassandra_ not being completed until 1959. ... One reason for the delay to the later ships was that the last four featured a further modification in that they were rebuilt with an enclosed frigate-type bridge which made life considerably easier for the duty watch on the bridge but perhaps lacked the imaged demanded of traditional destroyer men!" Cheers, Mike Potter San Diego, Calif., USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Ron Subject Re IPMS Rules As far as I know you can enter models that have won other competitions laterally (same level of contest) and upwardly (local to regional to national) but not downward. Some clubs like DC do have a special contest category once a year for "Best of the Best" and to enter the model must have won first place or "Best Of" at some level. Personally if I have model win at a contest I only enter it upwards from then on or in special categories like I just mentioned. I haven't yet decided if I'd enter a pervious winner as one of the models in a "triathlon" category or collection category. I don't enter models to win, I enter them to show off my stuff to similar minded folks, winning is just icing on the cake. If I ever get to where winning is important, feel free to pee in my beer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Ron Subject Re Etched brass railings >> Need help. What is the best glue and best way to attached brass railings to resin hulls? << Same way as on styrene, CA applied with 0.010" to 0.020" diameter music wire stuck in a piece of sprue for a handle. I usually hold the parts with flat tipped tweezers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
