Vindex- both ships were part of the B.P.F. at the same time. I served aboard Vindex at this time, Perseus was also there and her pennant number was R51. I also served aboard her between December '45 and April '46. None of the light fleet, or fleet carriers displayed pennant numbers at this time or for the duration of WW2. In fact I believe that pennant numbers were only displayed up to destroyer size of R.N. vessels but destroyer leaders did not!.Escort carriers had pennant numbers painted on the hull side all the carriers had flight deck I.D.Letters and this was displayed on the forward edge of the flight deck and on the fin of the squadron aircraft. It changed at times. Victorious had S at one time and P at another but don't ask me when. I faintly recall that S was with the Eastern fleet and P was with task force 57. Yours Aye, (TaT). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Mike Potter Subject Re Heller Arromanches (ex HMS Colossus) Hello Richard Leo Marriott, _RN Aircraft Carriers 1945-1990_, has a photo of HMS _Colossus_ in 1944 that spans about 5.6 inches (14cm) . This book cites her RN pennant number as 15. Pennant 61 was assigned to the incomplete _Hermes_ until 1947. I've never seen a pennant number in a photo of a late-war or early postwar RN aircraft carrier. The flight deck letter was D, the same as for HMS _Illustrious_. A photo of her sister ship HMS _Glory_ shows the flight deck letter was at the starboard bow and port quarter. Cheers, Mike Potter San Diego, Calif., USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Peter Chant" Subject Re Heller Arromanches (ex HMS Colossus) In "Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm" the Colossus is listed as having parent ship letters C and D in 1945/6, then J and S in 1946. The same letters are also listed as deck codes, but I would think it unlikely that her deck was marked, only the aircraft (a Corsair 122/C is quoted). The pennant would have been 15, without a prefix. Again it does not seem to have been marked anywhere, but I, also, can only find distant photos. Probably Neil McHart's book " The Colossus class carriers" has the full answers, if you can get hold of it. Peter Chant Plymouth ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Roland Mar Subject Re HMS COLOSSUS TO Richard The data I have is that her pennant number was 15. This is from "British and Dominion Warships of WW II" by Lenton and Colledge. No idea where it was displayed. Sorry I don't have a source for pictures. HTH Roland Mar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject FINE MOULDS 172 IJN SUBMARINE KITS Hi SMML Modelling pals, Has anybody built the above kits? Are they has good like Hobby Link in Japan says? (A good site). Are they plastic or resin? (different notes on the web). Any ideas on colours or decals? Any detail books out there about them? What other kits are they? (lost all my IJN notes in a computer upgrade from Microsoft! 2 weeks work gone). A new book is out in UK ref IJN I-400 submarines in July 2005 from Midland Counties in Hinckley, 250 photos around £25. Watch this space! What kits are out there, full hull? What other kits on large submarines K Class, X-1, M Class (British), Surcouf (French), etc. The same for Midget submarines, X-Craft, Seehund, Chariot etc. Static or diving, info is for my son, he has a friend with a big pool. Who is the "knowledge" on Submarines in SMML Land? Has anybody had problems contacting WEM in UK? No replies to E-Mails, phone. Are they still on Easter break or what? Many thanks GARY MANSFIELD P.S. Thank you to you all that have asked about my stroke, Doctors going for further Botox injections... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "John Snyder" Subject Re S-boote guns That third handwheel was used to raise and lower the pedestal, which telescoped within its base, to accommodate the height of the gunner. Can anyone tell me what the canvas colour around the gun mantlets and on the boats was once the destroyers hit war service... I presume they didn't leave it white! Cheers Rob ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From 03136040@brookes.ac.uk Subject Re Heller Arromanches (ex HMS Colossus) Hello everybody, I'm replying to my own posting as I have found the answers and thought maybe others may benefit? The HMS Colossus had 2 pennant numbers in it's service, R15 and R61. Launched in 1942 and completed in 1944, she was designated the number R15. In 1945, just prior to her service in the Pacific theatre, she was redesignated R61 before being loaned to the French in 1946. During the brief transfer period, her pennant number was again changed back to R15. Her deck ID was initially 'C' between her launch and 1946. This was then replaced with 'J' prior to her loaning out as the RN had built HMS Centaur and designated her deck ID 'C'. Thanks to everyone with their suggestions and help, Richard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "lamkeel" Subject Original Flower Class Corvette Drawings for Sale Over the last 30+ years I have purchased paper (and some original blue linen) copes of original shipbuilders drawings for Flower Class Corvettes, and some of the fittings.
