Subject USS Princeton, Korean War My Father-in-Law was the Cat Officer on the Princeton, and gave me some photos of his tenure. While most of them are the standard “Service Life” fare, I noticed something that has come up on this DG before, the colo(u)r of the flight deck after World War 2. Of these ten photos, nine SEEM to show a blue tint, while the tenth can be nothing else. Check out the bottom pic of “princeton02.jpg.” Comments? I have a report that in 1917, during a visit to the Seeadler wreck by the RAN cruiser HMAS Encounter, two young sailors from her, cut the figurehead from the wreck, smuggled it aboard, but when trying to land it later in Sydney, were rumbled. It was confiscated, to eventually wind up at the Australian War Memorial. Staff there have confirmed they have such a figurehead, and the photo they sent me is attached. But, I have not been able to confirm if in fact Seeadler ever had such a figurehead in place. This one may have belonged to another vessel sunk by Seeadler, but removed prior to being sunk, I just do not know!! She was built in Glasgow at the R Duncan yard as the Pass of Balhama, in WW1, was captured by the German Navy, sent to Cuxhaven, was converted to an Armed Merchant Raider fitted with an auxiliary diesel engine, and made famous by the exploits of the Sea Devil, Lieutenant Commander Count Felix von Luckner, to wind up on a reef at Mopelia Island in the Pacific in 1917. I would really appreciate it, if any SMML members are able to throw any light upon the veracity of a figurehead being attached to Seeadler. I have not even been able to unearth a model of her, although I believe the Revel Model Co did have a model of her at one time. Your help is appreciated. Kindest regards, Mac. Gregory. AHOY. Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From keywestflyer@comcast.net (Chuck) Subject AKL or Coastal Freighter Watching Mr. Roberts for the uptime time, I now have the urge to try building USS Reluctant. While I can't find a model of an AKL or anything really close, I thought this group might have some suggestions for kits, semi-kits or hulls that might lend themselves to conversion to the "Bucket" . I'm sure this is dating myself with this esteemed group, but thought I would toss a line out and see what comes up. I figure a Coastal Freighter might work.....any thoughts? I have attached a couple of pictures of an AKL. Chuck Fly Fast, Live Slow Photo uploaded to the SMML site under Misc References. Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Rusty White Subject 1/350 deck cargo >> I'm building the Trumpeter S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien with the intention of showing her alongside a pier discharging cargo from hatches 2 and 4...unfortunately, I have no cargo. Does anyone manufacture assorted cargo (or what could pass as cargo) in 1350. I'm looking for palletized stuff, vehicles, etc. I'm hoping there's something along that line out there as I'm not looking forward to scratching that kind of stuff. << Doug, Tom's Modelworks makes cargo, vehicles, planes, etc for the O'brien model. Attached are some links to pictures of the HMS Ark Royal, 1 taken around 1938/9 and the other, shows her Swordfish in flight over her deck in 1939. You should be able to determine the colours for yourself here but I think you'll agree that grey is the obvious. As for detailed bridge pics, I'm afraid I couldn't find any. Best thing I think is to find some general pics and have them blown up on a photocopier. Typing 'HMS Ark Royal' on a search engine also brings up many results! http//www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/miscnara/19sb2j1.jpg http//www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/h79000/h79167.jpg Hope this all helps, Richard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Gary Subject USN 1945 seaplane colors Most Mariners in the Pacific wore the standard tri-color camoflauge of Sea Blue topsides FS35042, Intermediate Blue on the fuselage, FS 35164, with White FS 37875 bottoms. Some were camoed in Flat Black for night ops, ala Black Cats. Towards the very end of the war it's possible there were overall Gloss Sea Blue, FS 15042 PBM-5 Mariners in service. Gary Schurr ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Peter Subject 1350 cargo I am working on a similar project. Tom's Modelworks sells some things specifically made for the Liberty but they seem a little un-crisp from the photos. I have not seen the actual items. I am told that ISW sells 1/350 vehicles made for its LST kit but again have not seen the actual items. The photos look good. I am using items from GHQ, http//www.ghqmodels.com They are 1/285 scale, but relatively cheap, very well detailed and include just about any vehicle from WWII. Take a look and decide for yourself if the scale difference offends you, but by eyeball they look pretty good to me. You can order online. Also check the model railroad stores. I got some tiny scale lumber/planks that I am using on deck for supports and the like. I would LOVE some scale pallets, so if anyone knows of any please let me know. Peter ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Reynold.Oh@defence.gov.au Subject Re 1/350-scale cargo To Doug Bauer 1. Try the railway section of your local hobby shop. Stacks of timber/lumber is a safe fall-back. 2. Careful about palletised cargo. I'm trying to determine when the humble yet indespencible pallet was first introduced. Anyone know? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "Paul Giltz" Subject Cargo for 1350 Liberty ship Several approaches to this problem come to mind. Architectural model makers have used both 130 and 132 inch scales as standard scales in constructing models of buildings. Some suppliers have had vehicles available in lead/pewter. Other "generic" items were available too. Things like fire hydrants, light poles, etc. 132 inch scale is 1384-th scale, 130 is 1360-th scale. I'll try to see if I have any of my old catalogs around. I'll try a web search too. As a second thought, many ships carried aircraft on deck as cargo. I've seen lots of P-47's and P-38's in photos tied down and weatherproofed. At one time Alnavco, the wargame company had planes in 1384-th scale. The University of Virginia Library has a web site for their collection of WWII Army Signal Corp photographs. The Signal Corps took hundreds of photos of Army vehicles and cargo being prepared for embarcation at Norfolk Virginia for the invasion of North Africa, among other things. Great stuff, everything from locomotives to Sherman tanks to Euclid road graders. (of interest to those folks interested in "crawlly" things , some of these photos show army vehicles that are still camouflaged from training in California, before being sprayed and weatherproofed for transit, I've never seen anything like it.) Oh yes, lots of photos of freighters and liners too. Best by far are the photos of cargo and vehicles actually being hoisted aboard and lowered into the holds. I had never appreciated how much lumber went into the loading and bracing process. I will try to relocate the URL for that site by next SMML. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "Paul Giltz" Subject The Library of Virginia- US Army Signal Corps Photos-Norfolk Va My mistake, not University of Virginia. The URL for "The Library of Virginia" collection of WWII Signal Corp photos is www.lva.va.us/whatwehave/photo/sccabout.htm After you visit the site let me know sometime how many hours or days you end up looking for things. A tip using their search engine is a bit cumbersome. Try some general search terms to begin, like "vehicle" or "ship" or "pier" and expand from there. (my favorites, SS America as West Point / troop transport in some great photos from overhead showing her camoufage.......) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From ddamian@skrzynka.pl Subject Elevators on US aircraft carriers Hi, Maybe anyone knows how was build the mechanism of the elevators from hanger do flight deck?
