It came down to an important benefactor and change of management/leadership if I recall. Point out to the Navy that miracles happen -- CONSTELLATION (Baltimore), and successful operations at see by two Liberty Ships and one Victory Ship, not to mention the WW2 landing ship (last one) sailed home from Greece(?) by a few vets who decided to disregard the USCG about lack of seaworthiness. There are several possibilities. Navy reposses with promiss not to scrap because of historic importance. Local tug could donate to tow to Federal Property (Alcatraz, Treasure Island??). Then a realistic and suitable proposal, followed by competent effort, could get things going. The Laura Bush commercials about historic preservation could possibly have great influence. Get the Apollo 11 astronauts, and some of ship's company for that mission aboard the ship, with as much cooperation from History Channel, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, Oprah, whomever, for publicity and awareness. School kids used to collect pennies for other ships to be saved. Reprint Cruise Book for Apollo 11 recovery mission. Find a well-proven artist to start the events necessary to sell limited-edition prints of the ship, perhaps several showing various periods of operation, etc. Had rebuid of CONSTELLATION failed, the Navy threatened to repossess and scuttle with dignity, even though ownership had passed to several civilian groups. The SH-3 helicopter "66" that recovered many astronauts, not just 11,Was supposedly slated to end up with the Smithsonian. I have never seen it in storage or displayed. Maybe the Pensacola museum has it?? If HS-4 (the helicopter squadron) still exists, a landing on might be a possible event. There are many ship preservation groups active, including international, and also navy ship specialists. Saving HORNET will require that someone will secure all appropriate info from these groups so that lessons of the past need not be relearned the hard way. There is more, but no matter what I write here, ideas are not enough. We can't wait for the or the government, but the government has all kinds of nonsense priorities, many billion's worth, that are much higher than an irreplaceable treasure like HORNET. We all should remember the screw-up that lost CABOT to the scrappers of history. Just found a link to a page on the Japan Hobby Show from the airline modelling list, posted to show the upcoming Minicraft DC 8 kit, checked it out and for curiosity scrolled down to the bottom of the page. Several pictures show a large scale detailed completed model of Yamato in her final fit. The site is all in Japanese, but the plaque next to it has NEW in English, 1/144 (which appears about right for the size of model, about 5 foot long) and what appears to be an indecipherable, but significant six figure Yen price tag. The model is either on or next to the Fujimi stand. The link to the site is- http//www.hobby.co.jp/hobby_show/japan/pla/18.htm This is a model I've heard nothing about, any of you guys able to shed any more light on it? Dave Swindell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "DUCKMAN" Subject REALISTIC ICE HOWDY ALL, REALISTIC ICE IS VERY EASY. THE HARD PART IS FINDING A FREEZER LARGE ENOUGH IN WHICH TO WORK. HOPE THIS HELPS, DAVID IN DIXIE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Peter the Artillerist" Subject Armament of French Ships Hi, I was wondering whether anyone can tell me (or point me in the right direction) what the armament was of the two ships under La Perouse's command during his voyage of exploration - effective as at January 1788? The ships were the 'Astrolabe' and the 'Boussole'. Thanks Peter Webster Sydney, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Richa5011@aol.com Date Fri, 20 May 2005 102001 EDT Subject Re N3N >> I've thought of using the 1/48 Lindberg Stearman kit to convert to N3N configuration. << Along with the tail, remember that the N3N fuselage is covered in metal, not fabric as the Stearman was. Likewise the N3N uses a different engine. That being said, in the absence of a "real" kit, the Stearman is probably as good a place to begin as any. An update as you progress with the project would be most appreciated.
