Navy reposses with promiss not to scrap because of historic importance. << Scrapping the Hornet would be complicated by the ship's status as a National Historic Landmark. I'm not saying that it would forbid her being scrapped, but it would cause minor to moderate complications in the process. IIRC, her NHL status played a role in the ship's 1995 reprise from the scrapyard. >> The SH-3 helicopter "66" that recovered many astronauts, not just 11,Was supposedly slated to end up with the Smithsonian. I have never seen it in storage or displayed. Maybe the Pensacola museum has it?? << "Old 66" went back in service as a standard SH-3D after her role in the Apollo program (Apollo 13 was her last recovery). On June 4, 1975 she was lost in an accident and sank to a depth of what's been reported as 220 feet. There's an expedition to try to salvage her. You can read more here http//www.check-six.com/Helo66/h-final.htm I'll leave commentary on the other things in the post to those who have been there more and bought more T-shirts than I have. (You know who you are...!) ) jodie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "KLW" Subject USN Measure 21 Question On heavy cruisers with Measure 21 paint schemes, were the horizontal top surfaces of the 8" gun turrets painted 20B Deck Blue? While the specifications call for all horizontal surfaces to be 20B, the pictures I've seen seem to show the gun turret top surfaces in 5N Navy Blue. Then again, the colors are fairly close so that in a black and white it is hard to discern the difference. Any opinions appreciated. I am just finishing the Louisville (converted from the BWN Northampton) in her Dec 42 configuration and she carried a Measure 21 scheme at that time. Thanks Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Bevilacqua Luca Subject Re 1/144 yamato Kit Dave wrote >> Just found a link to a page on the Japan Hobby Show from the airline modelling list, posted to show the upcoming Minicraft DC 8 kit, checked it out and for curiosity scrolled down to the bottom of the page. Several pictures show a large scale detailed completed model of Yamato in her final fit. The site is all in Japanese, but the plaque next to it has NEW in English, 1/144 (which appears about right for the size of model, about 5 foot long) and what appears to be an indecipherable, but significant six figure Yen price tag. The model is either on or next to the Fujimi stand. << Hi Dave following on your exciting clue, I searched the web for "Shizuoka hobby show 2005" and found the following page covering (in English) the show http//kits.kitreview.com/shizuoka2005mw_1.htm. The page writer (Martin Waligorski) states the model being actually sold by Fujimi, assembled and painted, at "only" 860 000 Yens (about 6200 euros, or 7700 US$). Altough hefty, this price tag is far from absurd. For comparison you can see that another japanese company (konishi http//www3.ocn.ne.jp/~konishi/english.htm) sells resin/metal ship kits in 1200. Their 1200 Yamato is listed at 573.000 Yens. When you factor in the bigger scale 860000 yens, completed, looks reasonable in comparison. (BTW if yuo are interested you can see 1200 konishi based cruisers built by Alan McGivern in the steelnavy gallery for cruisers http//www.steelnavy.com/gallery_cruisers.htm, they do look good) Unfortunately I was not able to locate a Fujimi web site. I wanted to drop an e-mail to them to try convince them to make the ship available also as a "kit". May be some of us can help me on this. apart from this I was happy to see that I am not the only one interested in big scale battleships. Various posts I put on this mailing list about this topic, received little positive feedback, seemingly showing little interest by fellow modellers in battleships bigger than 1350. I understand cost/space/uniformity-of-scale considerations but I can assure you that size does matter. I am building the 1200 Yamato Nichimo and with all its defects, sheer size makes the 1.350 Tamiya kit I had previously built pale in comparison. besides bigger scale makes superdetailing easier, more resilient and possibly more rewarding. After all the trend toward bigger size is clearly there in many areas of plastic modelling. For planes there are several WWII 124 fighters available (even if 148 is the mainly scale there, does it sound familiar ?). Tamiya and Trumpeter did release big scale tanks in 116 altough 135 is the mainly scale for tanks. You may say ships are different, and sell in smaller numbers, but the 172 Revell U-boat has been indeed a very good seller. All in all I think that if someone (Trumpeter ?) makes the plunge to release a few new 1200 subjects (classic battleships would be best) they will establish a new niche. happy modelling to everyone Luca ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Phil M. Gollin" Subject Manouevring Aircraft Carriers by planes The RN formalised the use of aircraft to turn aircraft in "B.R. 2092 Handling Ships" (1954) (p.49) "Use of parked aircraft Aircraft can be used to assist carriers in turning at rest in narrow waters when tugs are not available. Groups of aircraft are ranged at the appropriate corners of the flight deck, so that when their engines are running at high power the turning effect on the ship becomes appreciable. Aircraft can also be used to assist the ship in leaving or berthing at a jetty without tugs. Aircraft fitted with liquid-cooled engines are liable to overheat and cannot be used for prolonged runs." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Harold Stockton" Subject S-boat crew and 1/350 scale photoetched sets Hannants has announced Czechmaster's new resin 1/72 scale S-boat crew sets. These are CMKF2158 172 Bridge Crew for Revell S-100 Schnellboot (3 figures) £4.95 £4.21 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=CMKF2158 CMKF2159 172 German Crew for AA Gun 3.7cm for Revell S-100 Schnellboot £4.95 £4.21 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=CMKF2159 GOLD MEDAL MODELS Etched parts (naval) GM350-27 1350 Sovremenny (designed to be used with the Trumpeter kits) £35.25 £30.00 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=GM350-27 GM350-28 1350 Nimitz (designed to be used with the Trumpeter kits) £37.60 £32.00 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=GM350-28 GM350-29 1350 CVN Extra Details. £37.60 £32.00 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=GM350-29 GM350-30 1350 CVN 1/4 Air Wing Details. £21.15 £18.00 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=GM350-30 GM350-31 1350 WWII Liberty Ship (designed to be used with the Trumpeter kits) £31.70 £26.98 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=GM350-31 GM350-32 1350 Admiral Kuznetsov (designed to be used with the Trumpeter kits) £37.60 £32.00 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=GM350-32 GM350-33 1350 Lexington (designed to be used with the Trumpeter kits) £37.60 £32.00 http//www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=GM350-33 The later price is the Export price.
