If you have contacts, and no pressing deadline, that may be possible. Or hook up with someone on active duty who could take it with him on PCS orders, once you have assured yourself it will be safe. There is a chance an air shipper will do it out of goodwill for combat vets. Make sure to prepare thanks (certificate or letter), acknowledge the donation on your reunion documents and at the event itself. Then send a few photos their way, thanks #2 and material for their website and yours. "We even ship . . . ships." Sounds like good PR to me. Most of their planes have a few seats for personnel, you might even be allowed to go along with the model. Give the shipper lots of viz and they might help at the next reunion. Or, find someone else to sponsor the shipping. Did NNSY&DD build your real ship? A little creativity can go a long way. Hank ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Edwparent@aol.com Subject Marsilly vs 4 wheel gun carriages Sometime before 1860 Marsilly carriages were adopted as standard U.S.Navy equipment for 9 inch Dahlgren cannon because of their superior recoil control. Niagara had all of her guns on the spar deck on pivots. Mississippi & Susquehanna during the pre-Civil War period had 4 wheel carriages on spar deck guns. During the war their armament was increased and probably changed to Marsilly carriages. I have no information on Wabash, but it probably started with 4 wheelers and then converted prior to the War outbreak. Miami & Connemaugh were built during the Civil War period and so their Parrott or Dahlgren guns were either on pivots or Marsillys. I have no info on Mersey. An excellent reference is Spencer Tucker's book Arming the Fleet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
