Since the America was the first "super carrier" ever submitted to tests from modern ordinance, I doubt the Navy wants anyone knowing that sort of information. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it anyway. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. Home of the "how to" ship modeling Cds flagshipmodels.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Mike Potter Subject Do-it-yourself photo-etch Ahoy, mates With my resident grandbaby away and unable to sample its poisonous chemicals and such, this past weekend I successfully used a do-it-yourself PE kit to make unique ship parts. My first product is a lattice mast for a post-WW2 RN destroyer. It's three surfaces of the mast. An early lesson from the missing fourth surface is, don't obstruct the light source. Is anyone else making custom PE? Cheers, Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Roland Mar Subject Re USS AMERICA >> I do not know if anyone here knows but on the Saturday, May 14, 2005 the US Navy sank the old USS America. I was just wondering if anybody has heard any rumors on her sinking and just how much she took be going down. << TO Pwesty They sank her as a test of exactly what it would take to sink a large CV, setting off various charges and weapons at various points. From what I understand, the details and results are rather closely held. Don't want to make the task of a number of potential adversaries any easier. HTH Roland Mar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Roland Mar Subject Re USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) radars >> I'm collecting all possible informations about USS Bunker Hill. One of the questions is radar equipment during 1944. On the photos there are some indications, unfortunately they are not very sharp. Can anyone help me about radar types and their placement on the island? << TO ddamian If you can get a look at a copy of "The ESSEX Aircraft Carriers" by Andrew Faltum, it has some data on the types of radars and their physical descriptions. The tabular data in the Appendices has some information on the type of island structures, when, and what was placed where. Your email indicates Poland, so I don't know how available that might be. HTH, Roland Mar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From seaphoto@aol.com Subject Prototyping Board Try Freeman Supply - they have a sample kit of machineable products for $ 25, and they even credit it back on future orders. http//www.freemansupply.com/MachinableMediaSam.htm Kurt Greiner www.warshipphotos.com www.warshipmodelsunderway.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Mark McKellar Subject USS America How about pictures! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From BRADFORD CHAUCER Subject Re Prototyping board >> Can anyone tell me where in the US I can buy an item called "prototyping board" in the UK? It's a resin-based product that can be used to carve/fashion scratchbuilt hulls. << You want either Butter Board or Renshape Both are resin products used for model prototyping . Butter board is fairly close to Bass wood in working properties but totally grainless. Rensgape is easily machinable but does have some grain. It is available in several varieties with varying degree of grain see http//www.generalplastics.com/products/product_detail.php?pid=20& http//www.goldenwestmfg.com/body_index.html http//www.huntsman.com/renshape/ http//www.freemansupply.com/RenShape440LowDens.htm Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Gary Kingzett Subject Re Prototyping board Doug, the material you seek is ButterBoard and is manufactured by a company called Golden West Industries, located up the road from you a fur piece, in Grass Valley, CA. They have a whole range of densities and hardnesses, which you may want to ask about, but Butterboard is what I use. About the hardness and density of wood, carves, files, saws, sands, machines, holds a sharp edge, no grain, paints without priming or filling, and when you carve it, it smells faintly of wood. Great stuff. Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From John Sears Subject Re USS America Will the Navy release any video or photographs of the America's sinking? I'm sure it was well documented. John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "David N. Lombard" Subject Re prototyping board Something like this? http//www.huntsman.com/renshape/index.cfm?PageID=4727 Found with http//www.google.com/search?q=prototyping+board+carve David N. Lombard Rossmoor, Orange County, CA http//www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/uncgi/Earth?imgsize=320&opt=-z&lat=33.8&ns=North&lon=118.08&ew=West&alt=7&img=learth.evif ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From bert mcdowell Subject Re USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) radars Damien Bunker Hill / 1944 (While still in camouflage) had the following an SK mounted on the starboard side of the funnel and an SC-2 on the port side of the funnel. On the tripod mast she had an SM mount and a YE homing set topmost in the usual position. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From "Herron, Danny" Subject Re Yamato 1/200 scale A “GREAT BIG THANKS” To all you guys who gave me that info on where to find the Yamato data and references. All of those are great suggestions and again I thank all of you. I have promised a gentleman, whose name escapes me for the moment; an “in – the - box” review and I am sorry that I wasn’t able to get it done as promised, but I will honestly try to get it done this week. Too many things going on. Grrrrrr. But as a side note to that, if you have the chance and want a nice challenge (in other words have a wonderful opportunity for some premium time for modeling, and of course if it’s within budget- as stated earlier I have a great new friend – Thanks Mike W) I whole heartedly recommend this kit. Awesome but yet a bit daunting. More later.
