This is especially true of foreign friendly diesel subs on battery. Check out the following for some dismal observations and facts http//www.knightsbridgeuniversity.com/documents/is%20the%20us.%20navy%20overrated.pdf It's long but a good read. I agree with his points on satellites. Despite what you might see on the TV show "24", satellites orbits are fixed, and you don't get semi-instantaneous global coverage of everything on the planet. Most surveillance satellites are in polar orbits, and pass over any given area twice a day at very predictable times. >> Hell, the Ruskies could do the same tests on thier own scrapped carriers << Kind of slim pickings here, as their few "carriers" were really more like modified cruisers with decks, still, 'tis true overall.... >> shots taken through thee periscope camera of an Alfa class sub. << No, the Alfas are all long gone..... The only good news about that has been it is now easier to get photos, plans, & information about the Alfa class, and see how far off we were on estimating their capabilities (e.g., test depths of 400 meters, not 800 to 1000). The Akulas are still out there, and could take Rusty's pictures though.... Overall, I agree wih him, there would be very limited information that could be gleaned by observing the exercise. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Von_Zipper@webtv.net (Bull) Subject Re USS Nimitz CIWS Hi Peter, Drawing from my (not so good anymore) memory..... there was one port side just forward of the angle bow, one forward starboard side (I believe on the Sea Sparrow sponson), and one aft, centered on the fantail. Hope this helps until I can dig out the photo albums or a more knowledgable hand pipes in.
