I don't expect the models are overly accurate, but there is only one possible piece of data in the book with which I might take exception. Regarding the paravane, one and only one expert in Japan had the "right" info, that the paravane was on deck, just forward of the AA gun tub which is next to the port-rear corner of A turret. This info was passed to an American modeler, who shared it at a meeting. I took a note on this info at that meeting, and have no reason to doubt it. But who can say for sure??? The American modeler has, I think, just finished the most elaborate detailing and improvement of the 1/200 Yamato kit likely to have ever been done. Seeing it boggles the mind, especially as the effort was shown throughout the progress of building. Totally freakin' awesome. A book written by a surviving junior officer aboard Yamato for the last mission says the wood decks were painted black. That's upsetting news, if true, to many modelers. Also, I forget the source at the moment, but Yamato's fuel state is a myth; there was enough for return to Japan. Maybe true, maybe not. Who can say? Hank ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "John Snyder" Subject U.S. Navy's Historic Preservation Program Having been involved in historic preservation for 30 years now, it's nice to see the Navy taking its cultural resources responsibility seriously. The parenthetical explanations of acronyms are mine "The United States Navy is planning for preservation compliance for its ships. The purpose of this email is to let you know what's in the works and seek comment from those who are interested. "In September 2004, Navy notified ACHP that it intended to seek a program comment on naval vessels, and since then have met with NCSHPO (National Council of State Historic Preservation Officers--the officials who implement the national historic preservation program at the state level), NPS (National Park Service--which is responsible for the National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmark programs) and NTHP (National Trust for Historic Preservation--a public organization concerned with historic preservation, and owner of historic properties) to discuss their proposal. Navy proposes to identify a set of triggers by which vessels might be identified as NR (National Register)-eligible during their service lives, which range from 30 years for most combatant ships to 50 years for aircraft carriers. At the end of their service lives, "architectural" and operational documentation for each ship, which presently is deposited in a variety of repositories, would be reproduced and deposited as a single set at the National Archives, allowing one-stop research. Eligible ships would also be considered for the Navy's existing donation program ( http//www.navsea.navy.mil/ndp/ ), although ship condition, proposed further use, and the finite ship donation market means that not all ships will be viable donation candidates. "If you have any interest in or thoughts about this program comment, let me know and I will pass them along to the Navy. "The initial outlines for the program comment seem to address practical considerations as well as historic preservation, albeit from a documentation emphasis. If you have concerns, let me know by the end of the month or contact Jay Thomas. "Jay Thomas Navy Cultural Resources Office v(202) 685-9203 (DSN 325) - note new number !! f(202) 685-1671 - note new number !!" Unfortunately, Jay's e-mail address was not listed in the mail sent to me, so anyone interested in commenting will have to phone or fax him. I personnally have known George for many years having parked my caravan alongside his at many model shows around the country. We also sank a few bottles of whisky in the evenings. I have many happy memories of our times together. In fact it is only just over a month ago that we were at Harrogate. It will be along time before those memories fade and he will be sorely missed.
