Lombard" Subject Re Kit Manufacturer Contact Information >> I purchased a resin kit (1/72 Swift boat) from a local hobby store manufactured by an English company S.D.D. The it is missing some parts and I would like to contact the individuals who make these kits. Does anyone know who puts these kits out and how to contact them? << Would you give us a review? David N. Lombard Rossmoor, Orange County, CA http//www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/uncgi/Earth?imgsize=320&opt=-z&lat=33.8&ns=North&lon=118.08&ew=West&alt=7&img=learth.evif ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Douglas Simpkin Subject 1939 SS Mauretania e a scott < Pa2u3472@aol.com> wrote >> Searching for subject model of SS Mauretania which was used as a troop ship during WW II, which I boarded on 13 Jan 1943, along with approximately 5,000 other American soldiers, ... << See John Bowen’s “More Miniature Merchant Ships” Conway Maritime Press 2003, ISBN 0 85177 936 0. He has a 6 page “chapter” with a couple of photos on the 1939 Cunard liner, with 1/1200 scale waterline plans. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Subject Re Mauretania "E.A. Scott" is searching for a model of SS "Mauretania", in which he traveled during WW II. My memory may now be failing, but I know of only one ship of this name of the size he implies, and that is the famous RMS "Mauretania" of 1907. She held the Blue Riband of the Atlantic longer than any other (22 years). She also was an armed merchant cruiser and then a hospital ship during WW I. She was broken up in 1935. I am not aware of a later ship of the name. Scott mentions a HMS "Mauretania" (1906/7). I cannot find any reference to such a ship, and I think it very unlikely that the Admiralty would have named a warship contemporaneously with a commercial liner. Could he be thinking of RMS "Mauretania" herself? "RMS" meant "Royal Mail Steamer", and such a title outranked the "SS" i.e. "Steamship" moniker. There is an article on a model of "Mauretania" by Donald McNarry in Model Shipwright Quarterly No. 28, June 1979. The article has a history of the ship, and then is focussed on his model; but he also mentions four builder's models known to him. One was said to be in the Smithsonian, Washington D.C.; it appears to have a white hull. Model Shipwright No. 46, Dec. 1983 has an article by John Bowen on RMS "Lusitania", which was "Mauretania"'s sister ship; plans at 1/1200 scale are included, as well as a description of the differences between the two ships. Sorry that the text above doesn't resolve Scott's question, but it may help him from going down a blind alley. Can any other SMML Listee help? Brian Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Paul Giltz" Subject British battlecruiser drawings There is a copy of John Robert's book "Battlecruisers" on ebay at the moment.( item 8312537230 ). Perhaps that would have the plans that one of the list members was looking for, but maybe not in 1200 scale. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Paul Giltz" Subject Mauretania as troop ship in WWII There will be a few responses to this one. The ship used as a troopship in WWII was the second Mauretania, launched in 1938. Try a GOOGLE search using the words " ship Mauretania 2 " and you will find some good info. Now for an open question, how many of you know how the names of many ocean liners were derived? examples Lusitannia, Mauretania,Carpathia,Aguatannia,Circassia etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Hank Lapa" Subject Re Mauretania My only suggestion would be to check into 1/1200 or 1/1250 scale pre-assembled models. Surely there is one or was one. Probably from Germany. Or talk to "Cobwebs" in Southampton, UK. Liner memorabilia seller. May have other things to offer for "your" ship. In my liner collection, I have a medallion containing metal from the first Mauretania commemoration the "new" Mauretania.
