It was the fastest steamer in the world for about 22 years. The Mauratania was the sister ship of the ill fated Lusitania. I recently purchased a1/600 Airfix model of the Mauratania at a local hobby shop and building it right now. Joey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Kevin W. Woodruff" Subject Re Mauretania as troop ship in WWII A ship's history of Mauretania 2 can be had at http//www.greatoceanliners.net/mauretania2.html >> Now for an open question, how many of you know how the names of many ocean liners were derived? examples Lusitannia, Mauretania,Carpathia,Aguatannia,Circassia etc. << Many of the Cunard ships were named after the Latin names of Roman provinces or for different parts of the world. Samuel Cunard started it in 1840 with the Britannia, Acadia, Caledonia, and Columbia The White Star line ships were generaly ended in the "-ic" suffix Prof. Kevin W. Woodruff, M.Div., M.S.I.S. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Mnw888@aol.com Subject SDD HI There used to a company called SDD who used to make models for the wargaming market, I have to admit I've not heard of them for many a year. I think they used to be based somewhere near Southampton. There are several wargames figures/models supplier lists floating about on the web, that could be a place to start looking Regards Malcolm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From potter4@att.net Subject Visiting San Francisco July 3-7 Ahoy, SMMLers in/near San Francisco I'm there July 3-7 on a family vacation. My modeling specialty is scratch-building of post-WW2 destroyer-type warship designs, including do-it-yourself PE. Navies include RN, USN, and Russian. Also I'm an author. If anyone might meet for drinks or coffee, please let me know. Cheers, Mike Potter ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "John Clements" Subject Mauretania & other names Paul Giltz asks about the names ending in 'ia' used by the Cunard Line. Some of these, like Mauretania herself, and the Aquitania, were named after provinces of the Roman Empire. Mauretania was roughly Algeria, and Aquitania south-west France. Lusitania was more or less Portugal and western Spain. Other names like Circassia were Latinised versions of geographical locations in their native tongue. John Clements ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Gernot Hassenpflug Subject Re transatlantic liner names (was Mauretania as troop ship in WWII) Well, for these British one, Roman provinces, although I can't imagine why those would be used, perhaps to sound imposing. Weird. My opinion is that the Castle Line had a much better idea. Was there maybe also an alphabetical progression? The trend obviously stopped somewhere, and went on to female royal family. Cheers, GH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Mark Krumrey" Subject 1/350 USS Enterprise/Yorktown conversion Has anyone on this list attempted to build the Trumpeter Hornet into either the Enterprise or Yorktown? I would like to build it as either ship in a pre war configuration with yellow winged aircraft. Some things are evident right off the bat, i.e., tripod mast platforms, less AA armament etc. Thanks Mark Krumrey New Richmond WI ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From JOHN RULE Subject Jim and Katrin's Party It is with great regret that I will be unable to attend the party at your place, Jim and Katrin, due to a family commitment. My oldest daughter is getting married, so I have had to trim my travel plans this year. One down, only five to go. Not only will I be missing your party Jim, but also the International Festival of the Sea. I will dearly miss seeing all of the friends I met at the last Bar-B-Q, but maybe I will be able to sneak a visit to the Telford show later in the year. I will also miss the opportunity to view Jim's models firsthand. I could use the inspiration. Anyway I wish you all to have fun on my behalf at the event and please drink a couple for me. I will be thinking of you on the day. Sincerely, John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Subject Re Battlecrusier Drawings I have a copy of the book which I am currently reading. The plans you are talking about are those for the Queen Ellizabeth Class. Actually, while we are on the subject of this book, I am somewhat curious as to what an "AA Gun" circa 1913 is? I ask this because my meaning of "AA" is that of "Anti-Aircraft", however, I have a nuber of references of "AA Guns" being fitted to British warships c1912 which is somewhat strange as military aviation was still very much in its infency. So I was wondering if "AA" had another meaning for that period? Brett... Townsville, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From Jeffon10@cs.com Subject Re Mauratania Airfix issued a 1/600th kit of SS MAURETENIA (=15+ inches) which served in WW 1 as a troop ship. I tracked down photos showing the camouflage pattern in black and white, port, starboard and stern views as well as a color war bond photo of the starboard side, but gave up on deciphering the aforementioned sufficiently to merit buiding a model and gave it away. Best, Jeff ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From jeff simpson Subject 1250 scale kits Endorsing John Kutina's remarks. I can recommend the service provided by Chris Daley, for USA residents he is an excellent first contact in this scale. However, although he does sell some kits, I would (humbly) suggest that modellers in 1/1200 scale (miniatures) should visit my own website for an overview of the kits that are currently available worldwide and possible sources of secondhand models. http//home.vicnet.net.au/~minnow If anyone has photos of kits in this scale, even better building notes or articles on modelling in this scale I would be glad to post them on my website. Please contact me directly. Jeff Simpson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From jeff simpson Subject sdd wargame models I am reasonably confident that "SDD" are also known as Stronghold In 2003 their Contact Address was STRONGHOLD MINIATURES 144 Lochbridge Road North Berwick East Lothian EH39 4DR Scotland UK Telephone +44 (0)7941 748241 web www.strongholdminiatures.co.uk Sometimes these small outfits can be rather elusive good luck Jeff Simpson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From Kelvin Mok Subject Model of Zheng He's Treasure Ship Go to http//english.peopledaily.com.cn/200506/21/eng20050621_191504.html to see the photos of Admiral Zheng He's giant junk that made a number of daring explorations into the Pacific and Indian Oceans before Europe's Age of Exploration. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject BATTLE CRUISER PLANS Hi All, John Roberts book "Battle cruisers" holds plans of HMS Queen Mary in 1913, drawn at 1250. (if buying second hand, make sure plans are in pocket at back of book). Also try Warship Monographs #one "Invincible Class" by John A Roberts (very rare, published in 1972), no plans put aome rare photos and line drawings. GARY MANSFIELD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From Subject Mauretania in WW2 My grandfather, sadly deceased, told me he sailed on the Mauretania II in the med during Operation Torch. He was in the Royal Artillery. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
