The problem is holding the ruler, card and knife with only the use of one hand (my left, I was right handed). I need the ideas team of SMML to see want they can come up with. I have seen all the long and varied discussions about every ship, modelling techniques etc know to man, so I am asking for your help now. I do not want to be left with reading my ship books and day time TV! << Gary, keep in mind that most of us have trouble holding the straightedge and moving the knife, and we think we're in good health. The last two issues of the Nautical Research Journal contain the beginning articles of a series called the Modeling Medic, Strategies for Success. by a fellow named Laddie Dick. He was born with only three fingers and a withered arm and is a professional model ship maker. He has spent a lifetime developing techniques to cope with problems of the kind you confront. If you can't find copies of the NRJ, let me know, I'll see what I can do to find a source for you in Great Britain. I am acquainted with the editor of the Journal, Scottie Dayton. You can email her at sdayton@lakefield.net I am sure she can put you touch with Laddie Dick. His approach is matter of fact and positive, as is yours. I am sure he will have information that you can use. I have also seen photos of exquisite models ( Austro-Hungarian battleships, winners in the Naviga contests) built by a fellow on the continent, Germany or Austria, I believe, who has only one arm. Perhaps other listmembers can refer you to specifics regarding his techniques. Gary Kingzett PS I will be in the UK for the next week, for Festival of the Sea in Portsmouth, so I will be uncomputerized for awhile, but I will answer any correspondence when I return. G ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Tim Perry" Subject Re One-handed modelling Garry, you will need to hold the knife in your good hand, so I wonder if a hinged straight edge attached to a clamp which is in turn fixed to the work surface. Perhaps you could lean against a pad at chest level to push the straight edge down trapping the paper onto the table/cutting mat. Just relaxing the pressure with your chest would then allow the straight edge to lift (balance, spring-loaded?) so you could reposition the work. Or maybe a treddle to do the same thing, which you could operate with your foot or knee? Just a thought or two. Worry not, I am sure the combined talants of this forum will get you modelling at full steam again!
