The zig-zag in the pipe rack up forward doesn't show on my T2s, nor does the inset on the aft end of the foc'sle. The aft deckhouse is very close to a T2 deckhouse, so I imagine this was based on the T2 or a post-war modification of it. Civilian tankers typically had black hull, white superstructure, and gray deck. Dark red below the waterline. Some models are light to medium blue hull. The Smithsonian model has dark gray decks and light gray piping. War versions were boring gray, and often had a 2nd deck over the piperacks, for carrying equipment and supplies. Bridge windows were portholes, rather than rectangular windows. I have assorted photos or both versions. Let me know, if interested. Cap'n Randy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Rusty White Subject George and true courage George, I was saddened to hear of your stroke. That must have been difficult to overcome having the use of you left side so restricted as to not allow you to enjoy your hobby. However I was wrong in my assumption and I apologize. You seem to be overcoming the limitations forced upon you with courage and dignity. It's great to know you still enjoy the hobby and I have great admiration for you and your determination. If more people in our country had such character we would be far better off. My hat's off to you with all due respect. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Graeme Martin Subject Daring type kits Check out APS Models. Allan Pew is the owner. He markets a semi-kit in 172 scale. Hull, running gear, turrets, small boats, various other fittings. Good, clear and readable plans. Ends up a larger model but fine for RC and as she was after or just before her 1980 late life refit. You can also find photos of HMAS Vampire at the Sydney National Maritime Museum web site. Good Modelling, Graeme Martin www.shipmodel.co.nz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Raven0222@aol.com Subject Gold Parts??? Is anyone familiar with the term "replica builders style" Refers to some kind of model ship building where all the main parts are gold. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject THANKS! - EARLY FRENCH/ITALIAN BATTLESHIPS/IRONCLADS Dear all, Thank you ALL very much that have posted advice on one-armed modelling for me. It is nice to known all those kind people out there, thinking about my problems, when you all have problems of your own. I am working on a few ideas, I will post how I get on! Now does the "SMML Think Tank (SMMLTT)" known about any books on early French Battleships, Ironclads etc 1860 to 1900; I have seen loads of photos and small mentions in various books like "Warrior to Dreadnought" "Steam, Steel & Shellfire" "Birth of the Battleship" which have caught my attention but I cannot find a book(s) solely dealing with these really different looking vessels (to English Naval eyes), all that tumblehome, barbettes etc. I bet there is one in France... Lastly the same on Italian early Battleships? Again I have seen various photos, mentions in the above named books (which I own). Over to you... GARY MANSFIELD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Paul Giltz" Subject WWII Mauretania- plans I had forgotten that there are plans available for the Mauretania (2) that trooped in WWII.If you search out 'windjammer arts' on the web they carry the old Edward Wiswesser plans in 1/32 inch scale (1384).Not the greatest detail but only $6.00.The website is a little confusing. They don't give you "buttons" to click on, you have to click on the red-colored text. Come to think of it they have the only plans I've found of the Andria Doria (sunk in a collision with Stockholm). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
