I am looking for pictures or preferably, drawings of the Late version SJ surface search radar antenna and the SS air search radar antenna that replaced the Late SD antenna. Both of these are installed on the Grouper at this time during the war. Please let me know if you have any documentation or know of sources for such documentation on these two radar antennas. Thanks in advance, Rick Nelson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Gmshoda@cs.com Subject Early French/Italian ironclads I also find these ships fascinating. I built a small model of Redoutable based upon an article and drawings in Warships International several years ago. The article was included in installments in about three issues of the magazine. But that was the only source of detailed information on French ironclads that I have run across. Redoutable was was not really ironclad as it was the first steel battleship, but she did look similar to the other French battleships of the time. The Encyclopedia of Battleships by Tony Gibbons has a nice drawings of Jaureguiberry that I used to make another model. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From JOHNEME@aol.com Subject Re Early French/Italian ironclads >> Now does the "SMML Think Tank (SMMLTT)" known about any books on early French Battleships, Ironclads etc 1860 to 1900; I have seen loads of photos and small mentions in various books like "Warrior to Dreadnought" "Steam, Steel &Shellfire" "Birth of the Battleship" which have caught my attention but I cannot find a book(s) solely dealing with these really different looking vessels (to English Naval eyes), all that tumblehome, barbettes etc. I bet there is one in France... << Hi Gary, You might want to find The Development of a Modern Navy; French Naval Policy 1871-1904, by Theodore Ropp, US Naval Institute, ISBN 0-87021-141-2, 367 pages plus a detailed bibliography. This book deals more with the strategy that led up to the design of the ships, than the ships themselves, but I found it an incredibly good read. John Emery ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Bruno Gire" Subject Re Early French Ironclads Hi Gary, About French ironclad from 1860-1900, you may be interested in getting the detailled sets of official Navy plans ("as built") for nearly all of them. Most of the plans are now hold in the Centre d'Archives de l'Armement, in Chatellerault, France and are available as large digitized .tif computer files. Original plans are to the scale of 1100 and original sheets are around 1.8 x .9 metres. They're scanned in compressed .tif form to files which are 500kbts to 8 Mbts in size and can easily be opened with software like Photo Shop (5.5 or later) or Paint Shop Pro (5 or later). You'll need a computer with at last 256Mbts RAM with Windows Xp or an equivalent in size when opened, the files can grow to 20-30 Megabits. Detail is down to the defects on the original paper ! You just have to zoom on any part or print any area. How can you get those plans ? 1- Ask for a ship by giving her name, type and date of commissioning send an e-mail to Archives Curator, Miss Martine Destouches at Martine.DESTOUCHES@dga.defense.gouv.fr Ask her -in French- for small "vignettes" these are very small .png files, one for each plan which gives you an idea of what is on the plan. Ms Destouches should send you back a serie of e-mails with thoses vignettes, along with a .pdf list of plans with ordering ref numbers. Je vous prie d'accepter mes remerciements anticipés (your name & address) (list of ships ex croiseur-cuirassé POTHUAU (1895)) ---------------------------------- 2- You'll receive her e-mail with the list of plans, the corresponding "vignettes" (about 20-30 per ship each about 40kbts in size) and instructions in French for ordering 3- You'll place your order price is 1 euro per plan, plus 2 euros for the CD-ROM support, plus shipping 4- You'll receive your CD-ROM in about 2 weeks + shipping time Official plans from the ironclad era are truly works of art they show all interior equipment. The internal profile is often a masterpiece. Hope this helps Bruno Gire Bordeaux, France ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
