From what I have heard from the person that founder that she is in out-standing shape, up right and pround looking with no damage as far as can be seen. I am kind of wondering if we could have a Squalus/Sailfish like happing here? Maybe she was depth charged and lost some of her water tight compartments but other where tight and could not refloat? Anybody have an idea about this? Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) Subject Model shops in Melbourne, Australia Hi all, This posting is directed more at members in Victoria, Australia. I will be visiting Melbourne in a few weeks and would like to know what are the better model shops in that city for ship models? Thanks guys. Ray ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) Subject HMAS Australia Oddly enough I am about to embark on that very project. I am trying to deturmine if there is much difference between the Lion and Indifatigable classes. As I have drawings for both HMS Queen Mary of the Lion class and HMAS Australia of the Indifatigable class. However, my drawings for the Queen Mary include the shear lines for the hull as well as the general layout, where as I only have lines of the general layout for Australia. So I would like to know if there is much difference between the two class so that I could use the shear lines that I have for the Queen Mary for Australia. Brett Soden. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) Subject Re Paper Models and HMAS Australia Thanks Steve, I will check it out! Gary, see the book "Battle cruisers" by John Roberts very good! Have you searched the net? I remember seeing pictures of her and one just before she was scuttled 12 April 1924 24 miles east of Sydney, she was flying Ensign, Jack staff and was fairly complete! Arrived in Australia 28 May 1921. Paid for by the Colonies after which she was named. (The same for New Zealand). Plans held by National Maritime Museum (NMM) but very expensive! The Naval Historical Society of Australia published a book on her (www.navyhistory.org.au) A$25.00 by V Fazio product code NHBKS121. Reviewed by SMML! http//smmlonline.com/reviews/books/australia.html If you want some more info let me know. JSC do a card model of Invincible, Lion as at Jutland 1250 scale very good detail, will let get a feel for this class of ships. GARY MANSFIELD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) Subject Hudson Bay Company steamer Baychimo I would like to find out some more information on the Hudson Bay Company steamer Baychimo, 1322 tons, built 1914, acquired by HBC in 1921 and abandoned in the Arctic pack ice in 1931 - I would like to make a model of her. Her empty form drifted round the arctic held in the ice until at least the late 60's and maybe later. Some pictures and more of the story at http//www.btinternet.com/~alan.bolton/ - among others I would very much like to try and find scale plans or drawings for the ship. The sources I have indicate she was built in either Sweden in 1914 or Germany in 1914 and handed to Britain as part of WWI reparations (she may have originally been named "Amer Bonalfan"). Has any SMML'er got any more information? I would like to find out definitively where she was built and when, dimensions, any photos and of course if there are any extant builders plans or drawings for the ship. Note I have tried contacting the HBC archives but got an automated reply saying it would 8 to 12 weeks before they even look at my email. Thanks for any help David Hathaway ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) Subject Smithsonian collection of US Maritime Commission ships plans 1939-1970 The SMML list has had references to the merchant ships designed and built by the US Maritime Commission during WWII. These ships had a common system for designation ( C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4) but there were many variants of each . I've heard of the catalog of plans that the Smithsonian Institution offers;"The Maritime Administration Collection of Ships Plans 1939-1970". Does anyone on the list own this catalog? Which ship types are covered? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) Subject REF Yamato Hank, You didn’t say who the modeler was nor if there was any site to which we “Yamatiites” can share the this great model.
