There is a Gakken series of books in Japanese with excellent computer added graphic drawings, plans etc. of Yamato and since it is in a series, suspect there would be one for Shinano. Other than that............. Tamiya's newly-tooled Shinano in 1700 scale is a masterpiece, the kind of kit that begs to be built despite the rather inglorious history of the subject (based on the same hull as the giant battleship Yamato, the Shinano was the largest aircraft carrier built during WWII, but the U.S. submarine Archerfish sent her to the bottom with four torpedoes before she was even fully fitted out). Everywhere you look on the kit, Tamiya has crisply reproduced the little details that distinguish this one-of-a-kind vessel. Comes with a mixture of 32 late-war attack aircraft, molded in transparent plastic. Highly recommended. Doyusha makes a Shinano in 1250 scale but hard to find and expensive. Does anyone have a deck plan for a Batch 1 or 2 Leander Frigate (pre or post refit)I have one but it is a very poor scan and I cannot make out the text. I have a fairly decent one for a Batch 3 broad beamed (pre refit) if anyone wants a copy, just E mail me at middle_watch@yahoo.co.uk Also still looking for info and pictures on ECM aerials such as the 667/668 jammer in use in the RN during the 70's. Have scoured the libraries and written to the manufacturers without any joy. Anyone know a decent photo or diagrammatic reference? I am modelling a Batch 1 Leander at 1978 fit and am very keen to get the aerial kit exactly right. I thought Jane's used to do a recognition book that detailed all the radars and aerials for all ships, but cannot locate it on the library network. I remember that the Soviet aerials had the strangest names such as "Screech" and "Kneeling Bride" in it. Just bought Jim Alloway's photo study book "Leander Class Frigates" and highly recommend it, the photographs are excellent and give superb detail, but of course there are no close ups of the boring bits and bobs on the masts! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From brownatfareham@surefish.co.uk Subject RN Battle Class Fleet Radar Pickets I am interested in obtaining some drawings of the Battle Class Fleet Radar Pickets. Four ships HMSs Agincourt, Aisne, Barrosa and Corunna were converted to this configuration during 1961/2. I have a small scale drawing plus some photographs but would like to obtain a more detailed drawing. If anybody can help or suggest a source of such data, I would be most grateful. Regards Les Brown ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From URUDOFSKY@aol.com Subject Re USS America Are there any other photos of the sinking? Ulrich Rudofsky ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Stephen Allen" Subject HMS Victorious - semtex or corticene on decks? Hi all Have finally recommenced work on HMS Victorious, circa May 1941, after a trip back to the dockyard to rebuild the lower island to incorporate the void space underneath the forward section (thanks WR!) and have progressed to undercoat stage. My usual practice is to paint and then mask hard to get to sections such as platform levels on the bridge etc, before overall painting commences. My question is, does anybody know or have an opinion on whether semtex, corticene, or just plain paint waould have been used on the external deck areas of the island or elsewhere on the ship requiring non-slip surfaces? regards Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From David Wells Subject Re Japanese Aircraft Carrier Musashi "William H. Shuey" >> You might be referring to the Shinano, which was laid down as a third Yamato class BB but completed as an Aircraft Carrier. She was torpedoed and sunk on her maiden voyage by the U.S.S. Archerfish. I believe Hasegawa did a 1/450 scale kit for the beast! << I can confirm that they did. I've built it. It's kind of mediocre. The hull is reasonably good (same as Hasegawa's 1/450 Yamato) but many of the details are rather crude. The flight deck is attached with two exposed screws. I was particularly unimpressed with the 5 inch guns. Reviews of this and other kits are on Rajen's List. http//www.quuxuum.org/rajens_list/shiprevs.html "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Where can I get information on this? Thanks Chuck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "Sam Pullig" Subject Books for sale I have re-listed a number of books on e-bay that did not sell last time, with lower starting prices. I’ve also listed books by Friedman, Sumrall, and Dulin. Lots of good books, 21 to date, more will follow. Look for SPullig as a “favorite seller”. Thanks.
