I have a set of SHINANO plans from them and they are like blueprints and are GA's. Their plans are excellent for our purposes and are available on-line and are quite reasonable - around $15-20.00 USD direct from Japan (ys, they speak English). I believe that some on-line model shops like Pacific Front Hobbies also carries some of their plans. Hope this helps! Dr. Kerry Jang ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From ives100@aol.com Subject Re Gato/Balo plan book From "Thompson, Charles A CIV \(NFESCDET\)" >> The latest SubCommittee Report references "Tom Walkowiak's Gato/Balao plan book". Where can I get information on this? << It is now OOP. I purchased a copy a few years ago, and the drawings had line skips and the photos were washed out. I suspect that is why it was withdrawn from the market, as the plates were probably pretty well shot. It was an oversize book with extremely detailed plans of the various Gato & Balao outfittings. Is there a specific set of drawings that you need? Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Axel Wolters" Subject Re Shinano and new Osprey book about Japanese Aircraft carriers Hello all, I agree with David Wells, that Hasegawas 1450 scale Shinano-kit has crude details, but the kit appeared in the late 1960s or early 1970s for the first time and it was also motorized. So the crude details are a tribute to the kit`s age and the fact, that it could be used as a toy. The deck part which is to be fitted with screws, is removable to have access to the electric motor and the batteries. Doyusha`s 1250 scale kit dates from the same era and was also usable as toy or due to its big scale , even able to be fitted with radio control. Today its said, that Shinao should have survived the 4 torpedo hits, if all the rubber sealings for the water-tight compartments would have been fitted and if the hoses for the water pumps would have been fitted. This was planned for her final completion, where she sailed on her first (and last) voyage. Historicans also say, that it was planned to beach her on a nearby island, but her skipper kept her speed (she didnt loose much speed after the torpedo hits) high, so more and more water flooded the ship due to the missing sealings and not working pumps. Now I have a question for all I have heard , that Osprey books recently issued a book about aircraft carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Did anybody buy the book already and are there many (and new and before unknown) photos? Any information is highly appreciated. Greetings to all. Axel Wolters Moenchengladbach Germany ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From aweiner601@optonline.net Subject Re Japanese Aircraft Carrier Musashi Thanks for the help everyone,, appreciate it.. artie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From seaphoto@aol.com Subject Re USS America So far, the Navy has only released one photo of the sinking, which shows no part of the carrier. I wrote to them asking about this, but so far, they have not replyed. Kurt Greiner www.warshipphotos.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Gregory R Shirtz Subject uss narwhal I am wondering where I can find plans for the Uss Narwhal ss17. She was laundhed in 1909 and renamed d-1 in 1911. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Fred and Diana Subject Books for sale I recently came across two books that may be of interest to ship modelers. US Destroyer Operations in WWII ($20 Cdn) and US Submarine Operations in WWII ($18 Cdn) both by Roscoe. Postage extra. If interested cotact me off line and I'll pick them up. Cheers, Fred From the crowsnest ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Mike Potter Subject RN Battle Class Fleet Radar Pickets Ahoy, Les Just recently I've started to scratch-assemble a Battle Class Fleet Radar Picket in 1/600. That's to make use of various "1/700" parts that are in fact 1/600. A byproduct could be a computer-based drawing scaled from photographs. If that could serve, what scale do you need? Low-res sketches are in Peter Hodges' booklet Battle-class Destroyers, and of course in Jane's Fighting Ships and Weyer's Warships. Those are all I've found. http//community.webshots.com/album/139971881twfoHu has photos from the Newcastle Discovery Museum of a builder's model of a 1943 Battle, not converted to a fleet radar picket. The detailed traced drawing of a 1942 Battle in Edgar March's British Destroyers shows an early plan. In the actual ships (both 1942 and 1943 types) the fo'csle break was moved about 16 feet forward from where March showed. I found that out the hard way, after I built a hull to March's plan and only then compared it to photographs. I destroyed two Airfix Daring hulls and a weekend to make the right hull. There is a manufacturer out there who might be interested in producing this subject. How many SMML members would be interested in a 1600 Resin Model Kit of this liner, which sank after a collision with the Lloyd-Italiano vessel Florida in 1909? For those who don’t know the story, here is a brief re-cap "Republic was on the return leg of a journey from Genoa on 22 January. On the following day, in thick fog, she was rammed by the inbound Florida. A huge hole was torn in Republic's side just aft of her funnel and 30ft of Florida's bow was crushed like a concertina. Aboard Republic three people died as a direct result of the collision. ...wireless operator Jack Binns managed to summon Baltic to the ship's assistance. She arrived about 12 hours after the collision and in a four-hour operation took aboard all of Republic's (and Florida's) passengers. Shortly after 2030 on 24 January Republic disappeared beneath the waves. With the loss of the Republic, White Star Line possessed the unfortunate record of owning the largest ship to have foundered at sea. That record would stand for just 3 years before the same company rewrote it." (Excerpt from White Star Line In Picture Postcards - Robert McDougall and Robin Gardiner, 2003, Ian Allen Publishing, ISBN 0 7110 2986 5.) Republic's watertight subdivisions were a precursor to the Olympic class. And because the system of 12 watertight compartments had performed so admirably (keeping the mortally wounded liner afloat for about 36 hours after the collision), it was naturally concluded that the improved subdivisions in the Olympic class would make them 'practically unsinkable'. Republic was also the first ship to have radioed a distress call - CQD. There is a possibility that a kit could be produced in the near future. However, pricing at this stage is not known. But at 1600, the cost should not be beyond the reach of many of us who spend a considerable amount on the current resin offerings as well as aftermarket accessories. For the moment, that’s all the information I have to share. Please limit all feedback to this subject only. There might be a survey for other subjects soon… Looking forward to your feedback, Michael J.
