I am having difficulty in getting hold of plans and specification for two classes of ship in which I am iinterested. These are the Rudderow class (TEV) destroyer escorts and the 173ft PC submarine chasers. I bought the Rudderow plans advertised by the Floating Drydock. These were excellent, as far they went, but did not include platfors below the main deck, or the hold, and contained no structural detail. (For modelmakers, why should they?) I also got hold of a mish-mash of PC plans from various sources (principally WM Veigele's excellent book)but again can find no "insides" or structural detail. Can anyone out there help, please? << Your best bet is find someone to do the research for you at NARA in College Park, MD. It won't be cheap but you'll get copies of the original plans if they exist. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Bruno Gire" Subject Shinano Hi folks, I'm too planning a Tamiya 1/700 Shinano. The kit is excellent with a lot of details. Most of modellers around built this carrier with an aircraft complement, green late war camo, lot of details, etc. I'd like to model her "as sunk", i.e. uncompleted and I'd like to know what was her real state on her final day. Did she had her main guns, AA armament, radar equipment, any fitting already installed ? Did she wore her green camo pattern? I have read on this forum years ago her flight deck was covered by a special antiskid compound made of glue and brick powder, giving a curious pink colour. Pink & green let's imagine such a diorama... Any info on her last day's state? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Bradford Chaucer Subject Re Going to Atlanta I'll be there. BTW I proposed (on SteelNavy) that we come up with some thing to add to the name tags to identify us as SMMLies or Steelies. I had suggested red and blue self adhesive dots. Jon at Commanders offered to provide yellow smilies at their table as they did a few years ago at VA Beach. That is fine with me, so lets all descend on the Commanders tables and scarf up those smilies. Just nobody touch any of the kits till I'm done shopping!!! -) Regards Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Henry T. Chen \(Hatari\)" Subject Odysseus Hi SMML members, Not exactly a model question. But an "Ocean" question none the less, ok, I'm pushing it..... But is there anyone out there whom might remember the title of a movie? Anyway, it was probably made during the 60's or the 70's. Story about Odysseus's journey home, after the Greeks had sacked Troy.. I saw the movie when I was a little boy during the 70's. Wonder if it's made into a video or DVD, some of you must know the title of it? Can anyone help? Best, Hank ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "John Snyder" Subject Re Maritime Administration Plans-replies Hi Paul, Try to get hold of a copy of "Shipbuilders Cyclopedia", published in 1920. Chock full of plans of freighters, tankers, passenger ships, Lakers, concrete ships, wooden cargo ships, etc. You may find it in the reference section of libraries, and arrange an interlibrary loan (I found my first copy at the California State Library). If you go looking for a copy of your own, however, be prepared for a HEFTY price tag.... What humans were unable to do, Hurricane Dennis handled nicely. The former dock landing ship Spiegel Grove, serving as artificial reef on the bottom in 130 feet of water off Key Largo, flipped upright as the core of the storm passed some 200 miles to the west. Its a position project organizers wanted since the retired 510-foot ship prematurely sank and rolled over May 17, 2002, leaving its upside-down bow protruding from the water. A salvage team managed to fully sink the vessel three weeks later, on its right side instead of its keel. The Spiegel Grove is the most popular artificial wreck in the Florida Keys, home at least 166 different fish species, said Lad Akins of the Reef Environmental Education Foundation. But its realignment will make it a better platform for sports divers. "I m flabbergasted," Rob Bleser, volunteer project director, said Monday afternoon after a dive on the newly oriented Spiegel Grove. "Nature took its course and put it where it belongs." The Spiegel Grove reef is about six miles off Key Largo. The ship, designed to carry cargo and craft for amphibious landings, was retired by the Navy in 1989. http//www.navsource.org/archives/10/1232.htm Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Subject IPMS/USA Nationals in Atlanta Greetings I will be at the Atlanta convention, and I am looking forward to seeing the usual SMML suspects. Hopefully, there will be some new faces in attendance. With Hugh Letterly's and David Angelo's permission, I suggest that we use the Loose Cannon table as rendezvous point. Models registered as of 14 July already exceed 1400. I hope the quantity and quality of ship models is at least as good as the Phoenix show last year, which I thought was the best of the last six nationals. See you there.
