For me it's a ten minute drive from my house. There is, however a small problem. The IPMS meeting coincides with my son's wedding in Buffalo, NY. What choice would you make, and why? << Victor, No brainer. Go to the IMPS Atlan...umm...er... oh well, go to the wedding. You have lifetime ties to your family to consider. Excluding the requirements of national service, there are only two acceptable excuses for missing your son's (or daughter's) wedding 1) you are dying, 2) you are already dead. Any other excuse will just make you a smelly fish whenever the family gathers. There will be other conventions. Russ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Simon Scheuer" Subject Re Odysseus by any other name! From >> The film is titled Ulysses, and it stars Kirk Douglas who gets the bounce on all the evil suiters in this version by stringing the bow no one else can manage and shooting them with it. Hollywood has no shame, fancy mucking about with Homer and sneaking in some Robin Hood and King Arthur! << Hollywood didn't sneak in anything. Homer wrote it that way including the shot through the axe heads. Even further, he kills one suitor by jamming a spear down his throat as he begs for mercy. Homer's homecoming is so bloody, Hollywood actually dared not shoot it that way probably because a modern audience would likely lose all sympathy for Ulysses. There is much literary analysis focused on why Ulysses was so protrayed to be so bloodthirsty in the homecoming....redeem himself to his wife? vent his frustrations of the 20 year return voyage? He just couldn't end with an explanation to his wife like W.C. Fields did in "Man on a Flying Trapeze". A battered, Fields in shredded clothes simply announces, "things happened". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Ives100@aol.com Subject Re Going to Atlanta Perspective I have two sons, 22 and 19. The 22 year old just graduated from Williams College and is conducting research at Harvard Medical School before graduate school. The 19 year old is a sophomore at Amherst College. I didn't build as many models as I might have liked when they were growing up, instead I spent time with them. I wouldn't have had it any other way. Nothing in this world means more to me than my two sons. I hope the same is true of you for your son. Look, it's only a hobby. Sure, it's fun and (one hopes) relaxing, but in the end, it's ONLY a hobby. IPMS happens every year (maybe not as convenient to you as Atlanta, but still, every year). Some things happen only once in a lifetime, and you need to get them right. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Gary Kingzett Subject Re Going to Atlanta Keep your options open, they might have a snowstorm in Buffalo and they'll close the airport so you don't have to decide. If they don't, we'll have a cold one or two on your behalf, and you can see what happened at the next club meeting. Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject THANKS - STEPHEN McCALLUM, how do you contact him? - The Late ANTHONY PRESTON Hi SMML Think Tank (SMMLTT), 1. Many thanks to you all with your replies in regard to cutting card etc with my stroke. Some ideas are looking good. Also thank you for the help on early French Battleships (thanks Bruno)! There is information out there, it is knowing where to look! Still no firm replies on early Italian Battleships like the Dandlo with four 17.72in, 100 ton guns, laid down June 1873. I have a card model at 1200 of her sister ship Duilio. A 1200 scale plan from Germany. Any help from the SMMLTT? There must be books on them with photos, plans etc? 2. How do you contact Stephen McCallum, author of "Russian and Soviet Battleships", reviewed in "Warship 2005", page 197,198? The review says corrections, amendments etc will be posted on the web. What is the web site address? I have the book, what can you say about it? It is very readable, good drawings, photos, very, very good, yes I know it is expensive at £65 but well worth every penny (put it on your Birthday, Christmas list now)! I can see why Stephen learnt Russian to write it! And when does his book on "Russian ironclads and costal defence ships" come out? 3. Having just obtained my copy of "Warship 2005", I was shocked to learn of the death of Anthony Preston, he will be sadly missed for his knowledge on the Victorian Navy and every thing naval! A great loss to us all. Warship has been running a few articles on Anthony's book "The Worlds Worst Warships"; has the SMMLTT got any ideas on any? If we could agree on a few warships, we could send the details to Warship's Editor? Thank you to you all, GARY MANSFIELD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Gregory Turek" Subject motorised plastic scale models Is anyone interested in motorising scale plastic ships? I have done so with 1400 queen mary2 using parts from toy r/c boat. works well in still water ie pool. next project 1400 titanic. mechs out of r/c toys are very cheap, tiny and scale in function. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
