The kit is excellent with a lot of details. Most of modellers around built this carrier with an aircraft complement, green late war camo, lot of details, etc. I'd like to model her "as sunk", i.e. uncompleted and I'd like to know what was her real state on her final day. Did she had her main guns, AA armament, radar equipment, any fitting already installed ? Did she wore her green camo pattern? I have read on this forum years ago her flight deck was covered by a special antiskid compound made of glue and brick powder, giving a curious pink colour. Pink & green let's imagine such a diorama... Any info on her last day's state? << Bruno, I too was intrigued by the unusual colors reportedly sported by Shinano as she was on her way to be fitted out. I actually did a quick out-of-the-box build of the Revell 1/1200 MiniShips kit to play with the green/green/pink scheme. Attached is a pic of the model...rather silly looking, but lotsa fun! Regards, Tim Reynaga Tim's photo of his Miniships Shinano has been uploaded to his Mainbrace Page on the SMML site. I have Brain Kings book. (Very good, I wish I had his skills)! Still looking on the web for any books dealing with the service life, building etc these ships. We need something like "The Kellys" on Victorian Battleships and Battleships 1865 to 1919. Vol 1 to 7 - RN, French, Russian, German, USA, Italian, and lesser Navies? << Gary, I am afraid you have exhausted my direct resources. I do have a couple of interesting citations for you, however, if you want to pursue this line of questioning in more depth. Dreadnought by Richard Hough, published by the MacMillan Co, New York, 1964 refers extensively to the work of Vittorio Cuniberti, and Benedetto Brin as the developers of Italy's modern (1870) navy. The Complete Encyclopedia of Battleships by Tony Gibbons, published by Salamander Books, London, 1983 offers an abbreviated operational history of both ships as well as a line drawing and color rendering. Neither book has a bibliography but it is clear from the texts that they drew their information from Italian and other Continental sources. Gibbons' had editorial assistance from John Roberts and Roger Chesneau, which helps validate his work in my mind, and Hough, who passed away only a couple of years ago, was a highly respected historian. Perhaps Mr. Coker can offer you more useful information, but I suspect that an ability to read Italian is going to be required if you want to get much deeper. Gary Kingzett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject U.S. NAVAL INSTITUTE PHOTOGRAPHS Hi SMML Think tank! How do you go about ordering photographs from them. I have been on their website, but I cannot get the photographs I require (like those in "Birth of the British Battleship"). Can someone take step by step or do you have to write/e-mail them? Advice please. Many thanks. Gary Mansfield ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "John Snyder" Subject Re Shipbuilders Cyclopedia Hi Erik, Well, it would probably have helped if I'd gotten the title right. Here's what you need Shipbuilding Cyclopedia. Published by Simmons-Boardman Publishing Company, Woolworth Building, New York, U.S.A. Copyright 1920. The full title is "Shipbuilding Cyclopedia A Reference Book Covering Definitions of Shipbuilding Terms, Basic Design, Hull Specifications, Planning and Estimating, Ship's Rigging and Cargo Handling Gear, Tables of Displacement of Commodities, Arrangement and Working Drawings of Modern Vessels and a Composite Catalog of Marine Equipment." It was edited by F.B. Webster, J.L. Bates, S.M. Phillips, and A.H. Haag. I obtained my copy through a search by Princeton Rare Books. I don't recall the price, but it was several hundred dollars. SHINANO I too have a desire to someday attempt constructing this super-carrier employing the 1/250 Doyusha kit which a good friend saw fit to pass on to me. Though fairly complete, this kit does present a definite challenge for even the most skilled among us. Most of the research I've done seems to agree that Shinano was in a modified two-tone green pattern at the time of her fatal voyage from Tokyo Bay to Kure. The "pinkish" anti-skid composite added to the deck is new ground for this reader, however. Enright and Ryan's volume which covers her sinking by Archerfish note that she shipped none of her proposed airgroup on that voyage, although she was slated to receive 20 each B7A-1 Ryusei (Grace)as well as "modified" 17shi Zekes, plus another seven B-6N-1" Saiun (Myrt) recon aircraft. These she would not take aboard until she reached the Inland Sea. Of particular interest is that Shinano, on the night she was sunk, was carrying fifrty "Ohka" suicide aircraft as well as six "Shinyo" suicide speedboats which she was to eventually transport to the Philippines and Okinawa. Fortunately, a US sub, less than a thirtieth her size, saw to it that these weapons never reached their destination. No doubt this would make an interesting modeling subject. bob bracci ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "MW Models" Subject Kits for sale Hello, Here some other kits for sale Artitec 2x HrMs Kortenear, S-fregat, 350 scale, resin kit with PE, euro 65,- Left over from last time Koln Class Cruiser, 600 scale, resin kit (pour quality, euro 8,- Price excluded postage, interested please contact me off list. woortwit@tiscali.nl Michiel Woort The Netherlands ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
