I had a book ( "Strange Tales of Australia" by Alec Hepburn & Vic State Library), that told of the Confederate commerce raider, CSS Shenandoah, arriving in Melbourne Australia on 25 Jan 1867 and creating a "Graf Spee"-type incident. She docked to have a broken propeller fixed and, naturally, the American Federal Ambassador objected. When some sailors jumped ship, naturally, the ship's Captain objected. When the Shenandoah finally sailed on 18 Feb 1876, she had 40 new hands, so naturally, the American Federal Ambassador objected, again. << The dates here are off by exactly two years -- Shenadoah's visit to Australia occurred in January 1865, and the war ended later that year. On hearing of the capitulation of the Confederacy in August 1865, Shenadoah returned to Liverpool and was taken over by the Royal Navy late in the year. Had she continued her raiding into 1867 -- well after the surrender -- she would have been a pirate, pure and simple. http//www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-us-cs/csa-sh/csash-sz/shendoah.htm Tom Schoene ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Paul Giltz" Subject Re "post civil war" raider If you think about it, if the US "Montana" class battleships had been finished they would have been "post WWII battleships". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Harold Stockton" Subject P6 type MTBs used by the NVN Does anyone have any information about the Russian P6 type MTBs that were supplied to the North Viets during the wzar in Vietnam? I know that they were equipped with the Russian 25 mm/79 (1") 2M-3 (mounting), found at http//www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNRussian_25mm-79_2m-3.htm . These guns were fed from 65-round belts and the early guns could also be fed by 7-round clips. The twin mount on which these guns were originally used was designated as 2M-3. At a later date the mount was modified into the 2M-3M version. Where can I get more information about these boats? Thanks. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Harold Stockton" Subject 1/700 scale Bismarck PE sheets from Eduard Eduard has announced their new 1/700 scale Bismarck PE sheets; 17019, on their website at http//www.eduard.cz/ . The photos are really beautiful and this should also allow this same sheet to be used on any other scale DKM vessel in this scale. Their 17033 is the Scharnhorst in 1/700. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Edwparent@aol.com Subject CSS Shenandoah John Reid wrote >> How can you have a "post" Civil War Confederate raider? << Due to poor communications, Captain Waddell of the Shenandoah did not immediately receive at sea the news of the surrender of the South and the war's end and so continued to raid Yankee shipping until several months later.
