Korn-Neuburg has a shipyard where many ships for both inland and sea deployment were built. The show is being held from 25 to 27 November at the Wienerstrasse 20 09.00-1800 daily . There will be trade support as well as large and small modelships, I guess pre-dominantly of the Austro-Hungarian navy. I have taken the opportunity(pre-text?) to combine a visit of the show with two of my Austro-Hungarian modelships with a visit to that wonderful city Vienna--as well as many cultural attractions (Galleries--Gustav Klimt/Egon Schiele etc!) The Hundertwasser House; there is of course also the 'Heeresgeschichtliche Museum' (Military and Naval museum!) I will be taking my models in 2 x specially padded boxes ( hand-luggage) via airplane from London. Hope to meet some of you European Steel Navy.com and Modelwarship.com and smml modellers there! Downloadable info here http//www.doppeladler.com/misc/fhs05.htm Tschuess! JIM BAUMANN (UK) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject US Coast Guard Destroyers - flushdeckers Several good pictures in “Flush Decks and Four Pipes”, Alden (USNIP I think). En-passant mention of the flivvers in this service too. John Reid Rome, Italy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Reynaga, Tim@EDD" Subject Squadron/Signal Publications quality control Hi all, I was gratified by the response of Michael McMurtrey of Squadron/Signal Publications to my previous note in SMML about quality control in the "in Action" series. He asked me to send him some specific examples of poorly reproduced photographs so he can pass them along to the Squadron/Signal Publications art director, the man responsible for the photo quality. The following list represents only a sample of the less than terriffic photograph reproductions I found during a cursory look at some of the ships "in Action" titles WWII US Landing Craft In Action (Warship Number 17)--pp. 7, 9, 10, 11, 13 US Flush Deck Destroyers In Action (Warship Number 19)--pp. 18, 30, 31, 38, 45 US Light Cruisers In Action (Warship Number 12)--pp. 31, 34, 35, 37, 39, 40, 41, 42 US Heavy Cruisers In Action (part 1)(Warship Number 14)--pp. 20, 21, 22, 31, 39, 40 (AWFUL!) OK, many of the original images were grainy, out of focus, or otherwise less than perfect. I realize that some of the problems I've seen can be attributed to defects in these 60 year old images. Nevertheless, there are many examples of the same photographs being reproduced more clearly in other publications. For example, a photograph in US Heavy Cruisers In Action (part 1), page 33 of the USS Indianapolis can also be found in Classic Warships Portland class Cruisers (Warship Pictorial No. 10), page 53. The Classic Warships reproduction of the same image is noticeably better. There is another pic of the Indy on p. 34 in the Squadron book also found in the Classic Warships pub on page 57. Again, the Squadron reproduction is inferior. It isn't that the Squadron/Signal reproductions are terrible; they would probably be adequate for a publication geared to a general audience. It is just that most of us who buy these things are ship enthusiasts and modelers, the kind of people who delight in the very details that poor reproduction obscures. I have enjoyed the "In Action" series for many years. As a comparison I also took a look at some of the books I had bought years ago. In these, the photographic reproduction was as I remembered; first rate. Also the artwork (actually my favorite part of these books) is superb. Then and now, the reproduction there is flawless...so I know you guys can do it. Yes, it is more difficult and perhaps more expensive to maintain top quality, but if you commit to this I'll commit buy every new ships "In Action" title you release! regards, Tim Reynaga ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject Paddle Steamers in WWI &II Hi to the SMML TT (SMML Think Tank). Can we come up with any books/articles that cover wartime Paddle Steamers? WWI and WWII. I remember something about a WWII Paddle driven aircraft carrier (!) on the Great Lakes (Fine Scale Modeller)? And I have seen a very small book on British Paddle Steamers in WWII, but the photos are so small! (Printed about 1980)? Once again I know SSL TT will come to the rescue! Thank you. (For my last request on early French Ironclads; many thanks to Bruno Gire (what he can do with photo etch and his official French contacts!), Maarten Schönfeld & Hans Bosma (Dutch modellers who are very good!),L'Arsenal models (Jacques is a great help), France Amazon (just like UK/USA Amazon but in French) and of course the White Ensign Models (WEM) Team!! You do not know how it feels, being disabled but having all these friendlily contacts (along with SMML TT) who can help you with any small modelling problem (small to able people BIG to disabled). Gary Mansfield ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From david@dhathaway.freeserve.co.uk Subject HMS Burwell - RN "4-stacker" Fellow SSMML'ies A request that is a little outside my usual sphere of interest -) A visit to a small local museum in a little town near me called Burwell included seeing a small display on HMS Burwell, a 4-stacker (ex-USS Laub) given to the UK under the "bases for boats" scheme early in the war. They only have a picture and on talking to the assistant curator I determined they would appreciate a model of her too, if only someone would make them one. I have a (fairly basic) 1300 scale card model of a 4-stacker I can enlarge and kit-bash into something approaching the Burwell (at least for their purposes), but I need some help with it. Top of the list is references for the camouflage scheme as the model I have is in plain grey (pre-transfer scheme). I have found a photo of her in a multi-colour camouflage scheme - but it is in black and white so I need to know the colours that make up the camouflage, colours for the decks, etc and if possible the scheme details for the port side as I only have the starboard side details. A reference book with some colour profiles would be good. I understand she had two re-fits - the second more extensive than the last. Details of what happened to her in each of those refits would be nice as it would point me to the changes I need to make to my (pre-transfer) model. I know she gained more armament and the front funnel was raised - what else happened? There is a 1700 scale model of the Burwell available - B-Resina? - if the instructions for that model include the details I need, could someone send me a scan of the instructions and colour notes?
